It's just that any thread that is labeled "This is not meant to start things" usually does...in a big way!! So how are you going to react when Cletus gets on here and yaps his slack-jawed gums about inferior firefighting skills of women?? And so it begins...a big whoop over an issue that has been beaten to death on the forums. It's a free country...bring up what you wish...but to those of us that have been through this a MILLION times, it's like "Here we go again".
BTW....be more specific....Where exactly???:)

You can't honestly believe that could get away with asking this question by adding the proviso that we are to look at it as just a poll?
Would you ask the question, " How many departments have African-American(or South Asian, or Aboriginal, or Hispanic etc, etc) members, and would you trust them like a Caucasian on the fire scene?"
Of course not, how ridiculous and stupid would that be? Why are you trying to stir the pot by asking about male and female members on a fire department?
This question has been beaten to death too many times.

You know spitfire. You're really starting to concern me. I'm wondering if you are a firefighter at all. Maybe an explorer (no offence intended to the explorers) but I doubt a firefighter. IF you were, you would understand that on fire ground, you are generic! It doesn't make a difference if you are a man, woman or flying purple ape, if you can do the job then you are there. If not then go ride a desk somewhere and get the hell out of the way of the people who can!
Are you gonna ask what color everyone's engine is now?

LMFAO
Can you say a slight jump to conclusions on this one. I'm guessing that the fact the psychospitfire was missed on this one. Because the question is alot diffrent when asked by a female.
This whole thing about it has been talked about a million times and is a dead horse thing, and should never be talked about again is stupied. My suggestion would be to find something better to do if you have been here so long that the same conversation comes up over and over and you are board of it already.
Or maybe just ignore te question if you have had enough if it already. There will always be new people and they will have alot of the same questions that have been talked about time after time here, and rather then blowing them off, maybe try and ignore it or re state your position on it.
psychospitfire I think that through all the unneeded low blows you can see that msot professional Firefighters could care less what gender you are. As long as you can do the job, that you are a FireFighter. Welcome to the family.

Blaze, spitfire, here's a suggestion for you. Before you come in here crying about being picked on, try doing a search of the forums before you post things like this. You are both new here, so let me tell you how frustrating it is to see the same topics over and over because new people come in and won't do a little research. There are a TON more threads than the thirteen shown on a single page.
Before you expect people to forgive you for having a quick temper, realize that others sometimes have the same problem.
Asking how everyone feels about male vs. female firefighters is absolutely NOT a simple question. It rolls off the tounge simply, but the feelings, attitudes, and ramifications of the question are far, FAR more complicated.
Blaze, you came uncorked and told a long-time poster with a lot of friends here to bite your ass. Do you think that's going to generate a lot of patience for things like this? You also made the comment about no new comments since you'd been here last. How far back in the threads have you gone?

You wanted to be treated like "one of the GUYS" right?
What's the matter you can't take a little ball busting?
Then again I guess you aren't used to it, no doubt the guys you work with are worried that the second something remotely colored is said you'll go running screaming something about harassment.
You want no one to notice you are a woman, and you want to be treated like an equal. Then stop giving people reason to treat you otherwise!

04-24-2003, 07:03 PM
My dept. had a female FF once that was treated poorly near the end of her time with us. However, she was not treated poorly because she was female, she was treated poorly because she was a lazy, stuck-up, foul tempered rectum. Just like any man with the same personality traits would have been treated. The females currently in our dept. are better at firefighting than several men I know and a lot easier to get along with. I think what has made a difference is these women are not expecting any special treatment, like the other one, because they get none here, everyone is equal.
Psychospitfire, you should get a thicker skin where it comes to the good natured ribbing that everyone is open to on these forums. I don't feel you should take the joking that came from your question as anything personal. The best defence for this is NOT to make an issue of it, just let it go.

This post will go most likely nowhere. If the initiator of this thread would research back...this has been discussed several thousand times and the issue/results are the same.
Issue/results
Same job description for male or female. As long as the person can do the job I/we truct them without regard to gender. (have to add here that there are male firefighters I would leave out on the front lawn and replace them with female firefighters who kick **s). But as someone said...under the gear we all look the same....and do the same job. Whether you are male or female, respect and trust are earned through working together, not gauranteed..... NUFF SAID?
Now.... How many fire departments place the toilet paper on the roller with it rolling from the back and how many with it rolling from the front? Which is best?

I looked in on your profile. I know you are a firefighter of 1-1/2 years. You have less time on the forums. A genuine question? Yes. Asked a thousand times before? Oh yeah.
Thanks guys for being so mature and ridiculing me.
I don't think anyone was ridiculing you. They were merely pointing out your faux pau and having a little fun with it. And just so you know; I'm usually the one who is immature.
I really appreciate the sensitivity in this room.
This IS an encounter group. People who encounter it are sometimes offended by it.
I was simply trying to make the point that firefighting has typically been seen as a male profession, but I guess that doesn't matter.
And you had to tell US that? If it doesn't matter, then why did you ask it?
I don't appreciate the fact that I can't ask a simple question.
And we don't appreciate that you didn't do your homework.
Maybe this topic has been beaten to death, but I haven't been a member for that long, so I wouldn't know this.
Again, preparation. A little key word search would have saved you from this unsightly mess.
Thanks alot guys, let me know when you grow up a little.
Hey; there was a "gal" in there too! And being told to grow up at my age is taken as a compliment!:p

And that is SO grown up?
So; what have we learned here? That some of Life's lessons can be hard? That asking a leading question can take a wrong turn?

You know what I get tired of? Females making an issue out of females vs males on the fireground/scene.
I am a female who has been in the EMS/FF field 15 years. I get sick of women who carry harrassment handbooks in their turnouts. I get sick of females who have to make it an issue. I get sick of females who CAN'T do the job but expect that they should be a FF because they are a woman. And I truely get sick of women who think that I should agree with them when they have a male related issue that really isn't an issue, because I too am a female. DISCLAIMER: I KNOW that not ALL women are like this so I am only talking about the few who are. And we all know that they are out there.
I put up a sign in my department (3rd woman in the district, only one in my department) that says "Sexual harrassment will not be tolerated, it WILL be graded upon completion".
Regardless of what sex you are, if you can do the job then you can have the job. If you can't, then get the heck away from me so I can. I know as many men that can't as women and I don't think any of them belong in turnouts.

Yeah....she can back me up ANY time!
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Flying a mission over Iraqi forces,
Capt. Kim Campbell felt a large jolt at the back of her A-10 attack
jet.
"I had never felt anything like that before, but there was no
question what it was," recalls the 27-year-old, who is assigned to
the 75th Fighter Squadron stationed at Pope Air Force Base in
Fayetteville.
Campbell is back at Pope, but only for a short time. She is in
the United States for 10 days and will return to the Middle East.
It was April 7 when she was hit while providing air support to
soldiers north of Baghdad from the 3rd Infantry Division of Fort
Stewart, Ga.
Campbell was flying from an undisclosed location in the Persian
Gulf region. She'd already flown over Iraq four times.
"K.C," short for Killer Chick, her call sign, faced a critical
decision.
"Was I going to get to friendly territory and eject, or try to
land the air craft?"
Her jet rolled left and pointed at the ground. The caution-light
panel, normally unlit, was aglow. Campbell pulled back on the
stick, but the nose of the airplane did not come up. The hydraulic
systems weren't responding.
"There's a little bit of surprise, a little bit of anger, but I
didn't really have any time at all to focus on any of those
emotions," she says.
"It was more just reacting. Getting the jet flying was the big
thing."
With the hydraulic system gone, she turned to her pilot training
and the backup system, known as the manual reversion. She had only
flown using manual reversion just once during pilot training.
The control stick is connected to cables and pulleys that attach
to each surface, such as the rudder and elevator.
"It's a lot harder to move," she told The Fayetteville
Observer. "It's a lot more strenuous."
Campbell was flying with the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing. Her
squadron commander, Lt. Col. Richard Turner, was piloting an A-10
next to her.
Turner directed Campbell where to move the aircraft to avoid
enemy fire that kept coming.
Everything fell into place.
"I knew that I could eject if I needed to," Campbell said.
"Our rescue team was standing by. The crash recovery team was
standing by."
The landing gear came down and she still had control of her
"warthog," the jet's nickname.
It took about an hour to fly the several hundred miles from
Baghdad to Kuwait.
Campbell remembers the flight to safety as the longest hour of
her life.
"Every fighter pilot, we think we are invincible, and we think
it's not going to happen to us," she says.
Campbell also credits the crews that maintain aircraft with
making her safe return possible.
Her husband, 29-year-old Capt. Scott Campbell, who is assigned
to the 74th Fighter Squadron at Pope, was in another location in
the Middle East when he heard about the incident several hours
later.
His fighter-pilot spouse called him once she landed.
"I was actually thankful that I wasn't on shift to have the
ability to watch it," he said. "Then I would have had a lot more
time to think about if she was coming back versus coming in and
knowing she was already on the ground and safe."
Kim Campbell, a San Jose, Calif., native, says she loves flying,
especially the A-10.
"There's nothing better than flying the 'hog,' and I really
enjoy it," she said. "I plan to stick around for a while."

3. You acted on what you learned.
4. You understood the motivation behind the ribbing.
You'd be amazed at the people who can't do those four simple things. Your crust is thickening.

Ok Asst102,
I've got the IACOJ figured out, but I'm looking at your signature and trying to figure out what the hell the IAJOC is?
Or was that just a little dyslexic slip?

Maybe this topic has been beaten to death, but I haven't been a member for that long, so I wouldn't know this. Thanks alot guys, let me know when you grow up a little.
Welcome to the virtual firehouse.

Fire doesn't care whether you are male, female, or somewhere inbetween. It burns everyone the same.
and PA - Quints don't suck, people who use them the wrong way for the wrong reasons suck. ;)

Would you trust an Aluminum Pole more than a Brass Pole?
I don't really want to start anything, so just treat it like a pole, errr, I mean poll. :D
Stayback, your comments on brass poles?

I lost some money to a Pole during a smoker a few years back. I think there were a couple of Irish and a Ukrainian as well.
By the way Males and females in general do burn differently. Because on average women have a higher fat content and less muscle density, they should scientifically speaking burn faster.
Which is better: Chicken cooked with the skin on or skinless chicken. Perhaps you could wade in on this one Cheffie. I'll start, I think there should be a law banning skinless chickens. Think of how cold they get and what would there feathers stick to. Besides that the skin is the best tasting part. Leave it on!
Not tryin to start anything, just treat it like a turkey.
Oh yeah, quints do suck if meant to downsize manpower.

If true, then all I know is that if my wife and I were to spontaneously combust at the same time....She might have a chance of surviving, whilst I become a crispy critter!!!!
I guess that comes from eating too much chicken with the skin on!!!

This ain't right man. The Avs and the Wings out. The Stars get beat by the Ducks in 5 OT. The Rangers can't even get into the !@#$%$^%^&^% playoffs with the highest payroll in the league. What next? Messier in goal?

Hey, at least you guys have teams that make it SOMEWHERE. In Cincinnati our tax $ bought two brand new stadiums for: a) a football team with the worst records in the pros, and b) a baseball team that can't hit, field, or pitch.

I don't want to hear it.... we've got the LIONS and TIGERS (oh my!) And they both have brand-spanking-new stadiums. Too bad the teams don't have fans anymore who buy tickets and fill the seats. The novelty of a new stadium has worn off, so people have begun to recognize that Detroit's pro sports teams (wings excluded) can suck in an old and new stadium alike!
I'm sorry... what was this about again?

Funny how a thread can go from females and poles (!) to sucky sports teams and new stadiums.
Hey, Chicago is completely renovating Soldier Field. And the Bears will still suck! There's a lot of company here....

...and onto the topic I have a question about (sort of) -
does anybody know a good place online to buy major league jerseys that aren't polyester? I've got a really cool Mariners jersey from a few years back (has a 24 on the back) and it's a cotton blend.
