View Full Version : What's in your box??

Since the new EMT-I curriculum is slowly coming around I've been thinking about alot of drugs.

So far it looks like as an Intermediate I'll get the chance to push the following:

D50
Epi 1-1000
Epi 1-10000
Lido
Atropine
Amiodarone
Vasopressin
Albuterol
Demerol
Morphine
ASA
Glucagon
Nitro
Adenosine
and I think that's about it...

Now my question is: As either EMT-Is of Paragods.....what kind of goodies are in your boxes. And what do you use as a drug box and how do you fill out one.

Here every service has a different box and if you use a med then it's replaced at the hospital. My part-time service is using Craftsman 3 drawer tool boxes with a large open compartment. Actually works really good too.

What do you all use?

what kind of goodies are in your boxes. And what do you use as a drug box and how do you fill out one.

We carry:

Adenosine, Albuterol, Atrovent, Atropine, Magnesium Sulfate, Narcan :D, Epinephrine 1:1000, Epi 1:10000, Epi 1:1000 amps for sub-cu, Lasix, D 50, D 25, D 10, Sodium Bicarb, Glucagon, Benadryl, Thiamine, ASA, NTG tablets, NTG spray, NTG Paste, Amiodorone, Lidocaine, Lidocaine jelly, Calcium Chloride, Cetacaine Spray, Lidocaine and Dopamine in pre-mixed bags. Umm I think that's it. Oh yeah, we carry Cardizem as well.

This is all carried in a soft drug bag that is made by Iron Duck. Inside are all sorts of plastic pouches to stuff ampules (I hate the damned things), vials, and bottles as well as elastic straps to secure pre filled syringes. We also carry several 1, 3, 5, and 10 ml syringes with needles to draw up the meds.

In a seperate cabinet that has a metal box mounted to the wall we have our Versed, MS, and Valium. Both the box and the cabinet have their own seperate and differently keyed locks to meet federal laws for double security.

Our drug bag works well and is pretty easy to carry around without too much difficulty.

Just about everybody in this area seams to use the Plano 747 Box as their main drug box, some use a Craftsman tool box of similiar nature. Most carry some frontline drugs in their house bag in pouches or small plastic cases.

At my station we dont have any fancy Craftsman tool boxes, we have a hard plastic container for our drugs. We carry:
ASA, Albuterol, Atropine, Calcium Chloride, Dopamine, Diphenhydramine, D50, Epi 1:10,000, Epi 1:1,000, Glucagon, Ipecac, Charcoal, Lidocaine, Adenosine, Lasix, NTG, Narcan, Sodium Bicarb, Oral Glucose, and Cardizem.

For narcs we carry: Valium, and Morphine

In July of this year Maryland is adding a few new drugs to the protocols they are: Atrovent and Haldol. Our narcotics are kept in a metal box thats locked within a cabinet thats hidden in the medic unit. In Maryland they have to be doubled locked. Take care and stay safe.

Dang, if I's can give all these drugs, why the hell did I become a paramedic? I think we have too much stuff in the drug box as it is. When I was an "I" we could stick in an IV and throw down an EOA, that was it

We have an online version of our Regional Drug Bag available at http://www.emsinfo.net for review. It includes pictures, inventory, and each drug is clickable with full information. Actually a very educational tool.

We carry 20 mg. of the stuff where I work, because that's what our protocols tell us to carry. It is, however, used only when Adenosine doesn't do the trick. It is unofficially recommended to have the Atropine nearby when giving Verapamil. All of this is probably moot, as the area I work in has so many hospitals that if you've gotten this far down the protocol, you f***ked around too long on-scene.
