PETA Urges Hamburg, N.Y., to Change Name
HAMBURG, N.Y. (AP) -- A national animal rights group has offered Hamburg officials $15,000 to change the town's name to Veggieburg.
"The town's name conjures up visions of unhealthy patties of ground-up dead cows," said Joe Haptas, spokesman of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, in a letter faxed Monday to Hamburg Supervisor Patrick Hoak.
PETA offered to supply area schools with $15,000 worth of non-meat patties for the name change.
"Our offer is serious as a heart attack," Haptas said.
Hoak immediately declined.
"With all due respect, I think it's a delicacy in our community," he said about hamburgers. "We're proud of our name and proud of our heritage."
The Buffalo suburb, named Hamburg since 1812, claims to be the birth place of the American culinary staple. Hamburg commemorates the birth of hamburgers at the annual Burgerfest.
In 1996, PETA proposed that the Hudson Valley town of Fishkill change its centuries-old name to Fishsave, since the group believed the name conjured up violent imagery of dead fish.
The town was named by Dutch settlers in the early 1600s. "Kill" is the Dutch word for "stream."

Oh for crying out loud..
Does anyone else get really really tired of the world bending over backwards to please everyone else?
I am tired of political correctness and the extremist groups thinking that people should cater to them.
I'm done now.

What else do you expect from people with nothing better to do with their time than to sit at a map and find all the little villages with names that offend idiots.
Oh, and like Veggieburg will go over real well with New Yorkers.

It must be REALLY NICE to just sit around all day and think up new and dumber ways to extend POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. (BULL$?!# CONCEPT). Why don't these morons get a real job (like a firefighter?) instead of pressing their ridiculous, pinko, commy beliefs on all of us.

Living approximately 30 miles north of Hamburg, NY, I find all of this kind of funny. Actually I find it a scream. Maybe if the town was actually named Veal, I might be able to see it. Nah, I think this is just further proof that some people have too much time on their hands.
ROTFLMAO Stayback.... Porterhouse. I thought Ribeye! :p

We were driving by a field with sheep and baby lambs in it, and someone said look at all those cute lambs. I asked who was up for lamb chops, and he about broke his neck glaring at me. Another time we were talking about that stuff, and he said that although a lot of the tactics are extreme, that the message gets through, because people remember PETA for it. He didn't like it much when I pointed out we all remember Charles Manson, too, but that doesn't mean we're going to start listening to his drivel. :D

Remember these are the people that came up with the "Got Beer" campaign that urged people not to drink milk.
Kind of reminds me of Greenpeace using their big diesel exhaust belching POS ship to ram naval vessels to protest pollution.

I've met some of those guys, and I learned a couple of things too. I know, I know.. you're all shaking your heads in wonderment right. What could anyone learn from Greenpeace eh? Well, I'll tell ya.
We were tied up in Manila for 12 day cuz of broken diesel generators (ship carries four of them and three were dead) and there was this GP boat tied nearby. So of course being neigbourly like we are, well beer flowed largely and then we were in turn invited aboard their ship. Well first of all this one was actually pretty skukum, a lot of up to date gear including a small two man helo.
What we found was that there is a core crew of about a dozen or so, who are full time sailors, and their only job is to run the boat, and the equipment - THAT'S IT. The rest of the "crew" and that is a light description are aboard for six month tours. They get a phone call that says get your A$$ to this port (somewhere in the world) to meet "X" ship at this time - DONT BE LATE!!! ;) Then they get to sail around to where ever and do whatever is needed. Then they get told "GET OFF MY SHIP" and they are dumped at whatever nearest port they are too, and a new bunch come on. The core crew are mostly indifferent to the "cause", to them its just a job, although there are a couple who are "Officers" of Greenpeace to ensure things go the right way. I found the whole thing pretty interesting from an operations point of view, cuz almost all the visitors are rich kids with little or nothing better to do.
Oh and one last point: As I said before, the transient crew gets the order to meet the ship, at which time they make their own arrangements, and pay for their fligths. ADD to that, they also have to chip in their portion of the ration count for the ship while it is deployed. In other words, it is not a "holiday" for them. They pay get join the ship, they pay to sail on it too. But then when the ship arrives on "scene" they go to "work" if you want to call it that.

Other possible names are Sirloin City, Pork Chopville, Bacon Brook, Venison Villa, Vealville and Cow Tongue Township.
I also guess that Hamburger Hill is out of the question. :)

Now, they want the same thing for another town.
PETA Wants Town to Be Called Veggieburg
HAMBURG, Pa. (AP) -- An animal rights group says it will donate $15,000 worth of vegetarian patties to area schools if officials change the borough's name to Veggieburg.
But town officials say they're not biting.
"I don't care if they offer us $1 million worth of veggie patties or $2 million in cash, I don't think anyone in the community would want to sell their heritage," said Mayor Roy C. DelRosario.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says the name Hamburg conjures up images of slaughtered cows and unhealthy meals.
The offer mirrors one PETA made this week to Hamburg, N.Y. Officials in the Buffalo suburb, which says it is the birthplace of the hamburger, have turned down the offer.
"This campaign is a bit tongue-in-cheek because we don't expect anybody to accept, but the offer is serious," PETA spokesman Joe Haptas said.
Hamburg was incorporated in 1837. Town officials said the borough is named after Hamburg, Germany. The mayor said the idea that people associate the borough with animal abuse is silly.
"We don't have slaughterhouses in town and we don't even have any animal farms," DelRosario said. "Our name is connected to our German history, not hamburgers."

Vegetarian Patties - I'd pay $15,000 to have someone haul them away.
I wonder if PETA has a message board?
New Thread: Red Ketchup or Green Ketchup...which is more visible?
Smoothbore or fog garden hose?
What kind of stickers do you have on your tomatoes?

Those at Greenpeace and Peta and all the other spoiled rich kid groups need to look at things from a different point of view.
If a human was in the middle of the Sahara and came a cross a hungry Lion, you can bet your pennyloafers that he would become a human kabob.
Some of the things animals do to each other is far worse than anything Charles Manson would ever dream of doing. In the jungle only the strongest survive, so we happen to be at the top of the food chain. Deal with it.
