A experience of mine---many moons ago in a far off land called England a fair maiden from America was staying with us. As a good host we , knowing that she was jet lagged but still wanting to see as much as she could--Tower of London etc, offered to "Knock her up in the morning at 0600" this was received with shrieks of laughter! We could'nt understand how tapping on her door at the indicated time could affect her so much--then she explained!!!!!!!!

How would you like the full time job of "Knocker Upper"?-Yes it actually existed. In the coal pit and mill area's of England a man, usually a person that was no longer able to work due to injury, went around the village with a long pole--tapping on the windows of the early shift--just thought you would like to know! I think this practice went out after WW2.
