Looking for feedback on who uses smoothbore nozzles, especially in standpipe equipped buildings. Also looking for feedback on those of you who also use 2 1/2" handlines in these buildings.

We use Akron Brass low press. combo. nozzles in our packs. The deliver 150 gpm at 50 psi. N.P. They seem to work well for us although we don't have the opportunity very often to test them out.(thankfully)

A good way to test out nozzles and drill on standpipe operations is to set up a monthly drill in the warmer months at a facility in your district that has standpipes (example is a college dorm in summer). When you do this use a pitot gauge or portable flow meter to check pressures. Play with them until you get the maximum flow and the maximum amount of nozzle pressure that your nozzle team can handle. In the city we use a in-line pressure gauage right off the standpipe outlet. We use the following pressures (60 lbs for 3 lengths of 2 1/2", 80 lbs for 4 lengths 2 1/2") for our operations. Gauage is adjusted while nozzle is open to get accurate reading. Big importance is to remove all pressure reducers off of the standpipe outlet and let it flow to flush it out.

We had a drill (a while ago) at a new dorm at an area university. Thank god we did. The installer of the stand pipes capped all the ports with plastic caps. Once the system was charged all the caps blew and the stairwell looked like a Roman fountain. The school was more upset with the water damage(ie the FD) than the neglagance of the plumber. No need to say we never had another drill at the school but I bet they took a long look at the rest of their bldgs. We did more good for them than they care to admit.

Rippin73:
I am here to ask you nicely not to use the I.A.C.Y.J. in your signature. When you asked about an "international association of crusty young jakes", you were told that the IACOJ had a junior/explorer program and that there would not be an I.A.C.Y.J. chapter.
The name of our organization is copyrighted along with the use of "IACOJ". It is not an imaginery or fictitious organization; it is real. It is not tongue-in-cheek, but a viable organization with a membership list, a set of officers and a board of directors. In other words; we have a legal right to our name. Your's will cause confusion and besides; with you as its only member, it does not function nor serve a purpose.
Again; I will ask you to remove I.A.C.Y.J. from your signature. You do not have nor will not get our permission to use it in any form.
Thanks for your cooperation.

The good Chief has asked you nicely. I will be blunt and to the point.
Cease and desist the use of IACYJ immediatly or you may face legal repercussions from the IACOJ. As mentioned above, our name is copyrighted. Any use of our name or variant thereof is a violation of the law.

What a way to get a topic off course...
Go to the off-duty forum and look for a thread called "A New Firefighter's Organization" or something like that...you can post your app there.
