What is this Brenna1 virus that has hit all of the state sites?

A prolific and high-quality poster, that CR. All those posts and only one condom referrence (D'OH!! Just kidding!! Just KIDDING!!!).
This brenna1 is an optical delusion. I checked a number of the other states, and there was no brenna1 post to be found, despite what the index showed. The final proof was checking the states that had only one post: hers (damn slackers). Anyway, when you clicked on those states, it showed no posts of any kind. Wierd.

Sorry;
I have been over at the Connecticut thread trying to get a matter straightened out.
There appears to be a fella over there giving our drkblram a hard time. It seems to be a pattern. I hope my intervention brings this to a close for now. But my reply will stimulate responses, I am sure.
Guess we'll have to crank up the discussions here.
But the BMI is committed to going anywhere/anytime to smoke 'em out.
Even if it means raising the post count in another state.
See you at the meeting.

I read the thread you are referring to. I agree with your posts whole heartedly. I didn't add this to that thread. All that would have done was raise their post count without adding anything new.
Then again, I just did the very same thing here. Better here than there I guess.
As far as the meeting goes, I'll be on the road and will miss it.

Chief.... I'm just trying to spread some ILLINOIS charm (and a few germs) throughout our fine country. I will be spending about 2 weeks of "quality time" down south in April/May... Yeah; golf is such a silly game. Why, I'd rather get me a pole the size of a rake handle, put a nice Daiwa Gold Series Spin cast on it, spooled with the newest 120 lb test goat rope, a 15 ounce chartreuse whizbang shake rattle and roller fish catching unit or your double your money back and a boat that will go so fast, it will pull your face into a permanent "oh, I just crapped my pants" smile. You won't catch any fish, but you will talk about it for hours!:D
Chase a ball; chase a fish. What's the difference?

You never once mentioned to me that you were interested in my cultured and sophisticated way of life.
I know that you have the Museum of Science and Industry, but we have the Wheels of Time musuem. It just so happens, Blue Blood that he has one of the largest pedal car collections in the country! AND he drives a hearse around town.
I was merely pointing out that there is a great big wonderful world outside of Hinckley and Chicago.

In short; I accept your apology.

How convenient. You forget what you want to forget, and remember what you want to remember....
I have PUBLICLY called you my personal hero on several occasions.
I have thanked you, exceedingly, as I recall, for all the courtesies you have extended me.
You were the FIRST to receive a fine, all digital, suitable-for-framing image of our new snorkel truck BEFORE IT WAS EVEN PUT IN SERVICE. Some of our own people do not have that image yet.
I have extended, on more than one occasion, an open invitation to the sights and sounds of the scenic Greater Hinckley Metropolitan Area, including a guided tour of the site of the First Harlem Globetrotters game; a tour of the site of the FIRST settlement in DeKalb County; a HANDS-ON visit to the site of the largest fire in Squaw Grove Township HISTORY; an all-expense paid visit to the famous Welcome Matt Friday Night Fish Fry; and a visit to the world-renowned Wagner Memorial Museum. But no reciprocal offer has ever been made, other than to Alexis (and that wasn't even your party!!).
And yet, here you are setting up an exciting day trip for MIKEY, who spends his off-hours in Louisiana.
If there are any apologies due, sir, I believe they are yours.

Well, mister:
Since we are splitting hairs, I will admit that you absolutely did mention every glorious monument to the exceedingly picturesque metropolitan area known as Hinckley. But BRAGGING is not a technique for extending an invitation as far as I know. And why not?
I'd be proud of a restaurant named for a utensil that you wipe your feet on. Serve me up some, please. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
Show me where the Harlem Globetrotters played? Hah!
I can show you the front yard at Spanky Nelson's where an original and authenic TWO HOLE outhouse was deposited on Halloween night ten years ago.
First settlement in DeKalb County? I have two words; corn maze! That's right; Country Corners has a corn maze every year. But it doesn't stop there. It's HAUNTED!
Got your attention? Have you ever seen a pumpkin chucker that could chuck a pumpkin 3/4 of a mile? I don't think that ladder truck will extend that far, Jay.
So, maybe and I stress, maybe, if we can find a way to patch this up, you might get to come here right about the time the SWEET CORN is in season.
Don't say I didn't try.
See ya, buddy!

Youse guys are too much. Here it is 10:45. I.ve just spent the last 1/2 hour getting caught up on my post reading. CR and Jay, do you moonlight for your county tourism bureau? If you really want a historical site to see, come to beautiful Pearl City. I'll take you to the VERY spot that pearls were found in a clam on the banks of the mighty Yellow Creek. The birth place of the village of the same name. I even heard the water used to brew Milwaukee' Best came from the same location as the historical pearls. I was told you can tell it's the same water 'cause it smells the same too.
Enough of this rambling, I got fish to clean. Crappies, bluegills, yellow bass and perch. Oh crap, I'm going to be up past my bedtime. Gotta go.....

Wish I could offer some sites to see in DuBois, but the only thing I can think of is the Mule Barn. It's the local bar, the only one in town. They had some excitement over the summer. Had to replace the north wall before it fell down. That was worth watching when they tore down the old bricks. Great plate lunches there, though. And lots of Milwaukee Best. And probably a wine cooler, too.

03-15-2003, 01:21 PM
Stag beer was brewed right here in Southern Illinois, Belleville to be exact, until just a few years ago when they sold out to somebody else. It's kind of a dry beer that as far as I'm concerned is only drinkable if it's about 31 degrees (the beer, that is). As soon as it warms up a little I can't stand it. They still sell a fair amount of it around here, especially in Washington, Clinton and St. Clair counties. Go north at all and they don't know much about it. Stag drinkers claim you can drink a bunch of it and never have a headache. We don't do Meister Brau, just like we don't do Guinness. Falstaff and Pabst Blue Ribbon used to be really big sellers back in the 60s & 70s. My folks ran a tavern until I was about 20 so I sold a bunch of it back then.

That was my first time at the Sunday Meeting. I got lost a couple of times. Like I mentioned last night, I don't know how my kids can have 3 or 4 of them going at the same time and still be surfing the net. I'll make all of the meetings i can. It was an experience. That meeting was crazy. Even the old-timers (!) like CR commented about how crowded it was. Things thinned out quite a bit around 2000 hrs or so.
I had just noted to CR that I was wondering where you and pc were, and I had barely hit the "send" button when you logged in. It was weird. That was all. Nothing scandalous or fun like that....
On a side note, I think that maybe "buttload" and "crusty" are two words that ought not to be used in a sentance together....:p

I do know that in talking to some people in say, Henry County, that that area is VERY twangy!;) 'Course that's dern near to Iowa.

My mother is originally from Chicago (still a cub fan) but after 55 years down here, she speaks normal english. Her sister, on the other hand, has only been here for 7 or 8 years. Sometimes we have to laugh at her.
Just cause my mom's from up north doesn't mean I have anything to do with that part of the state. I was born a southerner, and I remain one through and through.
And we don't "twang", either.

On your final point; I am happy, but I'm not ecstatic. Why? Because we have approximately 1100 fire departments in Illinois and roughly 45,0000 firefighters. There are less than 10 of us who come here to check on each other. I find that disturbing.

No Jack; VC stands for "Very Confused". I knew it was a matter of time before some of the "locals" would trade on my fame and fortune by telling the good people here that they actually know me.
I have never met this man in my life, although I have heard about him. Let me tell you a little bit about him. His mentor is this wacker from OWFPD. He even tried growing his sideburns that long. Found out that his hair won't grow there. He bought a king cab so that his light bar would fit on his roof. His jacket weighs 75 pounds from all of the tac pins. When he was growing up, he couldn't decide if he wanted to be an EMT or a nurse. He chose EMT because he couldn't get his makeup right. He use to practice on neighborhood cats. Nobody knew what happened to their cats. Thought it was coyotes. They didn't know Super GHAS was intubating them!
Actually, he's not a bad kid; just cornfused. I can't say too much. After all, I have a reputation to maintain here, as well as there.
Consider this a warning VC. Next time; the gloves come off.

Well well well, I dont come on-line for a few days and looky what I find on my return. I am already pissed off because of the first thread I read today. Now its # 2. I always like it when new people give good ideas, share a story, tell a joke. I dont like idiots. On a lighter note. It was quite an urban/wildland day here in Southern Cook County on Monday . Not only did the men of the 3rd shift (along with off duty call backs)spend about 6 hours of quality time fighting some rather large and nasty grass, grass that turned into structure, tire, auto fires, then just plain grass again. They also fought a house fire and and apartment building fire. Hats off to both the paid and poc/volunteer crews of MABAS 24 for a fine job on a difficult day.

For the grass fires in your area, what tactics do you use? Do you have brush trucks? Or do you still deploy with fire brooms and squirt cans? Do you have farmers cut firebreaks with a tractor and disk? If no structures are involved, do you let 'em burn to the road and stop 'em there?
Funny thing about grass fires; they definitely aren't as "glamorous" as structural fires, but you work your butt off and it does take some "strategery" to work them.
Did Tyke ever tell you about his grass fire in Galesburg? If not; have him tell you. Funny stuff!

We actually have brush box alarm cards and there are quite a few departments with brush trucks. The fires Monday were in County forest preserve property and an unincorporated area with homes throughout and no apparent zoning laws. We use the brush rigs when possible but we also paddle and squirt them. The County is strapped for cash, so there maintenence crews are spread thinly. They have pickup trucks with tanks,Darley pumps and booster reels. It is like pulling teeth to get them to respond. One of the fires made it to the Interstate and another one burned a few structures along the way. We dont have many farms around here so the farmer method is out. Grass fires are alot of work and the crews were pretty tired when they went to the structure fires.

I will ask this, though: If the dumba$$es can't see the flashing lights, what the hell difference does it make what color we paint 'em?
jboczek
03-26-2003, 04:00 PM
Art, Jay, you're starting something that neither one of you will win. Red, blue, green, orange, whatever - it doesn't matter. My opinion is that if they don't see all our flashing lights, they won't notice the color of the paint.
You see, I had to change my thinking. I used to say "If it ain't red it ain't a fire truck" until we got a lime green one. Now it doesn't matter what color it is. Even if my guys are embarrassed to drive the big green truck. They say people laugh at them when they go by. We can't afford "fluorescent mother of pearl" and "fluorescent red" so we just get them painted red. Just plain old red. With lots of flashing lights and loud sirens. I don't care what color they are, I hate going on the interstate. They'd run over anything that's parked if they get the chance. Once again, somebody has to be the referee between you two. I can't wait until the IAFPD show when I get to meet yous. That is if you'll talk to each other civil.

Jack:
This paint has reflective qualities. When light hits this color, it literally lights up. At night, you can see it clearly from quite a distance. We found that with standard "Mack" red, it created shadows around the unit but this fluorescent red and the fact that we have lights under the truck as well makes it very visible, creating a safer environment with the driving idiots.
What's funny is that Jay doesn't know the difference between orange and fluorescent red. That's a hoot.

Funny story. Back when he took his Instructor I training, he wasn't a FF II. It was only AFTER he got certified as an instructor that we found out that he had to be a FF II, so we had to turn right around and send him and Jenkins to FF II. Needless to say, both wives were extremely happy about that little development. But having two in-house instructors has been worth every penny. It would be good for one year and could be renewed for another year if no instructor classes came up in the area. Needless to say, we didn't get done in 1 year so I "reupped" and we got 13 certified FFII by the time the year was up. I learned the curriculum as I taught it. Never did take an instructor class. That is one thing I wish I had. It sure would make trainings easier to have an instructor in house.

If I had done training hours under your criteria, I still would have smoked you. Think about everything that I have read. That is certainly training, wouldn't you say? And what about all of the training videos that I have seen over the years?
Sorry; sitting on the toilet and reading Firehouse is not training.
Nice try, though!
Oh yeah; and if I were to get hours for the time spent on FF websites; well, get my place in the Hall of Fame ready, baby!:D

Well, this post will be #1000! I wanted it to be in the Illinois forum where the tone continues to be friendly and the discussions lively at times. For those of you who might be curious, I am #12 on the list of Top Ten users of the Firehouse Forums. Ryan is close behind me and drkblram is ahead of me. But no matter. I am cutting back to devote time to the other site.
Along the way, I have gotten upset with some of the posters, as I am sure that I have irritated a few, but the feeling that resonates most of the time is a feeling that we are trying to help each other through a myriad of emotions brought on by uncertain economic times, a public that seems to be apathetic and new threats to our safety and health. Oh; there’s a few that don’t even register on the idiot scale, but they are on the forums for an entirely different motive.
The Illinois thread is fun. As most of you have noticed, many of the threads in the general discussions boards are not much fun. I mean, how many times can you discuss dashlights and flashlights? I guess that the number of times a blue light flashes is important to some. I know that a lot of what we discuss is sort of on the silly side, but it’s akin to kitchen banter. I think that it is necessary and especially for you who have come off of a rather crappy day. So, though we may not get into a deep discussion on hydraulics or the newest products on the market, what we do has value to us. And that’s what matters the most.
I don’t have anything really profound to say for my 1000th post, but I am glad that I am here and I am very happy to have met some very dedicated and decent people here. Our spirit in Illinois is strong. I think that it is atypical when compared to other parts of the country. I think that Don Moffitt, Ernie Russell and Dick Jaehne are a big reason why Illinois continues to develop and grow its fire service programs. I firmly believe that Illinois is the best.
So, Jay; I know that you have been watching with some interest the number 999.
I will continue to post as long as I have something constructive to say. Hopefully, you all will find it worth reading.
In any event, there is more on the way. Here and “over there”.
Thanks for sharing in this minor milestone.

1000 posts!! Congrats CR
I must say I totally agree with your comments about the forums. I have pretty much lost interest in FH except for the Illinois page. I enjoy coming here to learn, share and spread a little BS.
I was doing some surfing in the IL legislative site the other day and found that Don Moffitt truly is a friend of the fire service. He has been active with several fire related bills this year. Dick Jaehne spoke at a meeting I attended last fall. He was very blunt and to the point. We should feel very fortunate to have him in IL.

Amen to that, brother! I would say the only difference is that I tend to spread a LOT of BS ("Big Spoon??"). The general discussion pages have truly become a waste of time. And what a shame. But I have more fun shooting it with youse guys; plus some of the issues we have are unique to our little corner of the world. And so are some of the solutions!

I can't remember where I posted about a friend of mine who was suspended for 60 days, but here is that update and one rather humorous(I think it is, anyway.) about the same dept.
My friend's attorney served notice to the fire dept's. board of trustees that they had violated law by not formally hearing or writing a notice of suspension to the firefighter. The board's response to the attorney was that the law concerning due process of the firefighter didn't apply to them. Is that funny or what? If it wasn't for their superior arrogance-I mean ignorance, it would be funny. My buddy is taking it to the next level and will likely sue for his attorney fees as well.
On the lighter side, same department had a 10-50 last Sunday. They asked 6 or 7 times for the same directions. The woman on the base kept asking Knox County Dispatch if they copied her question and Knox County would reply "10-9". Finally, the woman on the base radio said "I don't know what '10-9' is, Knox County". Knox County said "it means 'repeat your message'! I think someone needs to have a school on radio communications.:p

As many of you know, there is a thread over in the General Discussions forums about “Inexperienced FFs as Officers”. And there has also been ongoing discussions about applications and background checks for prospective firefighters.
Well, I was contacted by a young man about openings on any Illinois fire departments, so I told him to send me some information.
This is what I got:
His name is Aristotle O’Shaunessey. His mother was Greek and his father was Irish. He is 28 years old. He graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in broadcast journalism, so he is especially interested in public information. He claims to be a motivator and is schooled in crisis management. He says that he is a mover and a shaker. “Grace under fire” is how he describes himself. He is a veteran of the armed forces.
He is currently single but looking. He would like something close to a populated area, but prefers to live and work in a small town, because he just wants to “blend in”.
He enjoys spicy foods, “big hair bands of the 80s”, collects guns and claims to play a mean hand of pinoccle.
I have told him about Hinckley, Jay, so you might be getting a call from him. I have attached his photo. He is available to start immediately.
Let me know how it goes.

Hey, Adze:
You are suppose to take the SCBA mask out of the bag before you put the mask on!
The bag you wear doesn't look like plastic to me; it looks like a paper bag. Reminiscent of a large paper grocery sack.
Were you ever a bagger at the local grocery store? Are you familiar with the "Unknown Comic"? Are you any relation? Do you have different sacks for different occasions? What would you wear for a black tie event, for instance?
The bag you wear for fighting fires; Nomex-Kevlar?
At what age did you start wearing a paper bag over your head?
How do you keep it on during a windy day?
Does it affect your golf game?
Sorry for all of the questions, but this is absolutely intriguing.
As far as the ice cream? NEOPOLITAN! That's always a safe bet when you don't know who likes what. Chocolate, vanilla and strawberry; take you pick.
Now; for the CANADIANS. RFC; you need to stop listening to AC/DC. I know English rockers can stir the emotions in us, but they are a band of rowdies. You've seen how Angus parades around on the stage with that scowl on his face, dressed up in his little schoolboy's uniform. Step away from the headphones and give your priorities a second look.

Hey,
Is it just me or is the Buger King sign backwards in the picture.
I know who is looking at the sign anyway? Well, if you must know I am.
The new wife will not allow me to look at other poopers. She knows all it is terrifing.

Well, it appears to me that the outsiders are trying to get our forum shut down by posting porno. That might pass muster in the Off Duty Forums, but not here. There's probably a young Illinois lad sitting there right now trying to expand his knowledge of the Illinois fire service and BAM! Someone sticks a butt in his face.
Don't come crying to me when we get our stern warning from the WT. Does "obnoxious, immature and unprofessional" ring a bell? I'll not be accused of it again.
I will SHUN the picture of the Burger King sign!
