CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE

CALGARY POLICE SERVICE PRESS RELEASE
This is related to a release and composite drawing that was
publicized through the CrimeStoppers Web Page on 2003 January
5.
After an exhaustive investigation members of the Child Abuse
Unit, Detective's Busch, Metcalfe and Lowe, located and
charged the accused, BLANK BLANK BLANK, DOB 1967 May
15, of Calgary, with the following charges:
SEXUAL CONTACT WITH A CHILD
SEXUAL ASSAULT
UNLAWFUL CONFINEMENT
All of these charges stem from an incident that occurred back
on 2002 September 29. The accused had masqueraded as a 14
year old male as he 'chatted' on the Internet with the 13
year old female victim. The accused persuaded the victim
into meeting with him in her residence and she was
subsequently attacked.
It is imperitive to get this type of message out to the
public even though it involves a young person, it is a two
-fold warning:
To advise young, unsuspecting children that there are people
in society that will take advantage of and hurt them, not
necessarily with a conventional weapon but something as
innocuous as a computer.
And especially for all parents, to be aware of their
children's computer time activities and to discuss the type
of possible outcomes which can stem from harmless 'chatting'
on the Internet. In essence, providing total strangers with
a window on your life through a medium that does not screen
or guarantee the honesty or sincerity of the other party.
Fortunately, this particular outcome is a rare occurrence,
however, as a parent you must take note that the Internet has
evolved into a household fixture, it is both amazing and at
the same time an invasive tool. You must educate and
safeguard your family from unwanted attention or intrusion by
others by practicing the same common-sense approach as you
would take in your everyday personal safety.
