Does anyone have or have any experience with the re-useable burn buildings???? I have never used one and was interested in seeing if they are worth the price??? And if they are a good simulator.
When I went to the academy they were just building one so we didn't get to use it. But I have used the mobile flashover simulator and it was great. any help would be appreciated.

I have been a ligher for the million dollar burn building out at the Ohio Fire Academy and it is very impressive. They use some sort of thermal tiles above the lighting points to keep the building intact.. Now, you don't necessarily have to spend this much. This building is computer controlled to light off LPG fires inside if you don't want to use lighters, a person in a control booth will die the fire down when the inside safety reports that water is being flowed, and they also have mutliple floors, multiple rooms, to similate most types of interior fire attack. Depending on your needs, a single room building may be sufficient.
Prior to using this, they have two of those crates you see on big freight ships, welded together (again so they could have two rooms) and simply let the lighters through pallats right inside the loading doors, set them on fire, and the crews would enter from the other side of the "can" as they were called. These buildings were also reusable, and let me tell you, those fires got hot as well (thermometers were attached to the outside of the can at the top and the bottom, very often the temperature at the bottom of the can was in excess of 200 degrees F, and the needle was buried above 800 at the ceiling)
Another thing to keep in mind is to place closable vent holes inside these areas for when it does get too hot.
I think the Ohio Fire Academy has a website, though I'm not sure what it is, I'm sure you could find it on yahoo, and there is bound to be a contact email address in there somewhere for someone who could give you all the information you might need.

I have been in many different burn buildings and love them. You can smoke them and heat them up just like a real house, but it is reusable. They build some with rooms where you can do live fire and some of them also incorperate propane burners which do a great job of really heating things up and when the place gets to hot you just shut the burner down or put the fire out a little. Some can also be outfitted with repelling hooks and hatches for practicing roof cuts.
