LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A 6-year-old girl trapped in a washing
machine that was filling with water was rescued Tuesday by a
passer-by who smashed the appliance's glass window with a tire
iron, authorities said.
The girl was at a coin-operated laundry with her mother when she
climbed into the front-loading machine and the door closed behind
her, said Fire Department spokesman Wayne Chaney. When the wash
cycle began the door locked and she couldn't get out.
As the washer begin to fill with water, a man walking by saw her
and tried to smash the glass with his arm. When that failed, he got
a tire iron from his car.
"It appears that some kids were playing, some siblings, and
somehow she ended up in the washer," Chaney said. "We're very
fortunate this young man was quick thinking."
Both the girl and her rescuer, Kloeum Nhem, were taken to St.
Mary's Medical Center.
Nhem received stitches for cuts on his right arm and was
released. The girl underwent surgery to repair cuts to her face and
body. She was in stable condition.
The Fire Department condemned and closed the laundry for
electrical code violations, Chaney said.

Hmmm... didn't think these doors could lock from the inside. All of the ones I've see have a handle that turns like a tap on the outside to lock the door. The door wont stay closed just from pushing it.

I'm not sure I even want to know WHY it was a bystander that noticed the little girl inside the washer instead of her mother.

Ya know - that same question was the first one to pop in my head when I read this too.

Actually my first question was: Where are the other kids...? someone must have closed the door, #2 was: Where is Mom in all this and why isnt she keeping some kind of control on them?

But then I read back to the beginning and saw the story was from California. We all know they do things a little differently down there. Sorry guys just kidding! :D Next to Oregon, I like South Califorina best - mostly down around the San Deigo area. There's this great Irish pub just off Broadway on 6th I think it is... mmmm good Guinness and awesome chicken wings. Trouble is I can't remember the name, but I know how to get there from Broadway Pier.

Hey CJ, now how's the "Sailor"? Not only a name but directions AND an alternate fun station just in case you didn't like the first one!

And I too am in wonderment as to what "electrical infractions" were infracted upon to cause total closure of the facility.
