Say a person had an "idea" that would make a certain aspect of our "job" easier. Something that had the potential to save lives. Where would said person go to firstly "patent" the idea so no one else could steal it, and secondly find someone to "market" or "build" it???? I would appreciate any and all input, either via the forums or in email. Thanks in advance!! :)

Obtaining the proper advice is extremely important. Try this link for Canadian patent info (http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/sc_mrksv/cipo/patents/pt_main-e.html). In any event I would contact a reputable patent attorney for answers to specific questions.

Thank you for the link. However, since 27 has been feeding me Rum all day *I wonder what he wants* I'll have to wait until tomorrow to read through it all. But thanks again.

You will also want to check the patent laws in the United States.

Also ask your lawyer about a Non-Disclosure agreement. We use them all the time, essentially any and all info disclosed to a person can not be repeated to another person without your written consent.

Make sure that it covers "intellectual properties" as well!
A good patent attorney will know marketing people also.
Good luck.

Step #1. Get a good lawyer who handles patents (in whatever country Utopia is in) He will help make your creation your's alone.

Step #2. Research companies who make or market the type of thing you are proposing (hand tool, pump adaption, bunker gear stuff etc.) Check out how they market their own products and see if it is what you need. Check trade shows, catalogs, internet etc. If you are thinking of selling your patent to one of these companies, get your lawyer again and make sure you get everything you can for your hard work.

Basicaly it revolves around getting the right representation to protect all of your interests. Good luck and tell us what it is as soon as you can.

I will be contacting a patent lawyer as soon as I can find one and as soon as I have the money to afford their outrageous fees *sigh* LOL. Engine5FF....... My little Utopia is in Canada. Malahat, BC to be exact. Thank you for your advice and you can be sure that once I have my "idea" protected I'll share it.:)
