I am happy to announce that my wife and I are expecting our first child. We have been holding on to this little secret for a few weeks and have decided to let it be known. The due date is April 17th and no word yet on the sex of the baby.

Yeah Baby!
Congratulations Motown!
So, are you planning on serenading baby in utero with some bagpipe tunes? Who'll be wailing louder, the babe or the agony bags? :eek:
(said tongue in cheek, as I struggle mightily to learn ANYTHING on my damn practice chanter!!)

Congratulations, Bro., and best wishes for you and the missus. If I can dig up an appropriate Irish Blessing somewhere I'll be sure to pass it on (although you probably already know several). Life's great adventure is just about to get a whole lot more interesting.

Motown,
Congratulations!!! When you think of Guinness, remember that the Germans used to use beer in a bottle to help colicy babies to sleep.
PS: buy Pampers - help pay my salary at my full-time job.

May there always be work for your hands to do;
May your purse always hold a coin or two;
May the sun always shine on your windowpane;
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain;
May the hand of a friend always be near you;
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you
and this ain't Irish, but its all about kids:
When I look at a patch of dandelions, I see a bunch of weeds that are going to take over my yard.
My kids see flowers for Mom and blowing white fluff you can wish on.
--
When I look at an old drunk and he smiles at me, I see a smelly, dirty person who probably wants money and I look away.
My kids see someone smiling at them and they smile back.
--
When I hear music I love, I know I can't carry a tune and don't have much rhythm so I sit self-consciously and listen.
My kids feel the beat and move to it. They sing out the words. If they don't know them, they make up their own.
--
When I feel wind on my face, I brace myself against it. I feel it messing up my hair and pulling me back when I walk.
My kids close their eyes, spread their arms and fly with it, until they fall to the ground laughing.
--
When I pray, I say thee and thou and grant me this, give me that.
My kids say, "Hi God! Thanks for my toys and my friends. Please keep the bad dreams away tonight. Sorry, I don't want to go to Heaven yet. I would miss my Mommy and Daddy."
--
When I see a mud puddle I step around it. I see muddy shoes and dirty carpets.
My kids sit in it. They see dams to build, rivers to cross, and worms to play with.
--
I wonder if we are given kids to teach or to learn from? No wonder God loves the little children!
Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.
I wish you Big Mud Puddles and Sunny Yellow Dandelions!!!

Hey Motown, thats great news.... Oh, and a quick phrase of advise:
(this was said to me on the announcement of my first one)
"Life as you now know it, has just ended. However, the real adventure is just beginning."
CONGRATULATIONS to you both, and enjoy!!!!

Now you really be looking foward to work!
Yep, no joke.
I've got a 3 year old and a 15 month old...lots more work at home than at the job.
And as 27 said, life as you now know it is over forever!
Let's see...advice:
Don't buy every gadget and doohickey made for kids to help them 'expand their learning curve'...kids play with boxes, eat things they find on the floor, and would bury themselves to their neck in the mud if you'll let 'em...just let them be kids. They're going to do what they want anyway, regardless if you just paid $75 for the latest, greatest baby/kid invention.
To prepare yourself for what it's kinda like, you should:
1) get up two hours earlier than you normally want to
2) stay up at least one hour after you get tired and should go to bed
3) watch Disney all day
4) occassionally poke yourself in the eye
5) have your wife randomly throw stuff in the floor to trip over
6) carry a 20 pound water ballon around on your hip
It helps as well if you can build up a tolerance to foul oders and nasty messes--you have no idea how darn messy kids are.
However, the good things far outweigh the bad things!
Congrats and good luck!

Oh, and most importantly, say good bye to a spotless house. I get very suspicious of people with small children and perfectly spotless homes........... I keep looking for where they keep the cells......:p

My wife and I are friends with three other couples (well, more than that, we have friends...but these are our primary friends :)
One couple's house is always clean...they have no kids.
The second couple's house is always clean...they have kids, but they're never home.
The third couple's house is always clean...they have kids, but they pay someone to clean it.
Our house? Constant state of disarray. The only way to get it clean is to send the kids to grandma's for a few hours, and then it only take 'em about 30 minutes to completely undo everything.

god, you're all going to scare the crap out of the poor man!!! what about the good things?? like when you look at your child and they give you that smile, c'mon, you know the one? or when your friends compliment you on what an adorable kid you have? or when they take their first step, say their first word, catch their first baseball, have a first date (although if its a girl, conviniently cleaning your shotgun when you meet him is helpful to get a point accross!:D )? or how bout when they get their first good grade and you can hang it on your fridge for all to see? sure, their a lot of money and effort to make sure they grow up okay, but its worth it! i could never thank my parents enough for the way I turned out!:rolleyes: take good care of your child, give them everything you had or wanted, but don't spoil them. teach them the values that you hold dear to you, and do it while they are young. just some advice from someone who was "growing up":p not to long ago. and someone said it earlier, let them be kids! you will have every bit of joy from them, although it will be tuff sometimes. always smile :D around them, and they will smile too. and that is a beautifull thing, my friend. take care and good luck! ;)

SilverCity4,
It takes your kids 30 minutes to mess up your clean house? What are they, slackers? Ours take about half that time.:D
SilverCity4
11-05-2002, 05:20 PM
Upon consultation with my wife, she says 10 minutes, but that's based on a couple of factors:
1) How soon they can find a deck of cards or a box of crayons.
2) If they eat anything crumbly (crackers, cookies, bread, popcorn).
3) How much they feel like chasing the cat.

Whatever you do, do not buy your children lego!! Or Mechanix, or any other building set that involves thousands of very small pieces that can inflict deadly harm when stepping on them.:eek:

Motown: had to chime in here to say:
1. congrats bro
2. are you gonna raise that kid next to the crack house?
Lady: The legos keep my kids busy enough that it's worth wearing boots around the house.

MOTOWN:
Congratulations to you and yours for the news of this life-changing event. Or should I say diaper-changing event?
I remember the early days of "Little Reason". He was head-strong, full of energy. He wore me out, but I wore him down. It was the best of times. I kept twisting until he promised to take care of me in my old age. Whoops! Was I thinking out loud?
Oh, yea; a name. I have the name whether it's a girl or a boy. It is one of those either sex names. Call your new baby...........drum roll, please.
GUINNESS!
That way, when you yell it; Baby will come and wife will bring you a pint. All without leaving your favorite chair!!!
Good luck with those parenting classes and La Maz or whatever they're doing these days.
When we had "Little Reason", she just screamed and cursed at me until the little fellow popped out.
Have a great time with the time you have left.
I'm so happy for both of you.
IMACOJ-move over; there's new crust on the way!

Motown, look forward to moments like this. And take pictures, because five minutes in that car seat and the hair is ruined.
She told me Sunday after a structure fire that she wants to be a "girl firefighter". THAT melts Daddy's heart.
