New leather not fitting right

After 6 years of service my leather bought the big one at a tire fire. I just recieved a new one but it just doesn't feel as comfortable as the old one. I removed the ratchet but it still sits too high. It looks like the webbing inside is not adjustable like my old one. does anyone have any tips or ideas on how to correct this. Also i would like to become a member of the IACOJ but I can't find any info on it thanks.

Sounds like you bought a sam houston. Unfortunatly, I'm finding they either fit you or they dont, there is no in between. Mine fits me just fine, but doesn't fit my buddy at all. He says his helmet (and mine for that matter) ride too high on his head. Unfortunatly Cairns doesn't put adjustable webbing into the helmets anymore, but if you find anywhere to get some, please drop me a line, the guys at my dept would love you.

Does it have a 4" round disk in the top of it? If so Cut that thing out! I got a new Leather last week and after I cut it out It was like butter, fit sooo much better.

i believe what 9302 is talking about is a round pad attached at thetop where the webbing comes together. if so, he's right. pull that baby right out of there. it should come out pretty easily. you'd be amazed at how much that little pad effects the way it sits!!!:eek:

Soak it in 30 weight for two days. Wear it and dont take it off for a week or so. If this doesnt work let me know and Ill take you to the next level.:D :D :D :D :D

It is my understanding that there are two different size ranges. Perhaps you got the bigger size. See if you can change it out and try that.

I have a Houston, and after much "fiddling" I cut the stiching on the 2 starps that hold that pad, removed the pad, and left the straps there. I am sure they are required for the suspension, so I restiched them in their "new" place. This way I still have the suspension, but it fits much better. My rachet is also sitting in the top of my locker. If you leave the rachet in place, you may have to "adjust" it so the helmet still fits right.

I agree with 9032. My New Yorker fit the same way. I also removed the ratchet, but the removal of that 4" pad really made the difference!

The lid I got is a New Yorker but it seems like they have changed the suspension alot I will try removing the pad and see what happens. However it will be a cold day in hell when I stop wearing it and wear tupperware.

So your saying cut the disk out, so that the helmet’s plastic hard liner rests on your head.How does that feel better? I too feel that my helmet is top heavy, but I don’t know about cutting that thing out of there.

The disc that I cut out is a foam pad that is woven into the suspension straps. When you cut it out, be careful. The straps are still there and the straps are what are resting on your head, VERY COMFORTABLE and not so top heavy!!

I see now, I was going to cut the straps and everything out. I knew that cutting that whole thing out off there didn’t sound kosher. The disk is gone now… Thanks for clarifying…

It does feel better I took just the foam disk out. I left the fabric that held the foam in and it feels a ton better. I also took the ratchet off. It looks feels and seems to wear better. Now all I need to do is go to the big Chicago for the real test. Thanks for all your help guys.

Well thanks for all of your input I cut the disk out and removed the ratchet. I finally got to use it in a live burn exercise much better fits just like the old one.
