Where do you get off posting this article? You'd better not be trying to bring up the "alcohol in firehouses" debate, again.

There is nothing wrong with alcohol in the firehouse. If I want to kick back at the firehouse, get hammered over a few cases of beer with my buddies, chase down an innocent civilian while driving a fire company vehicle (and still drunk), beat the snot out of him, and then deny the whole thing ... what's wrong w/ that? As long as I don't go on any fire calls, what's the big deal? I ain't hurtin' nobody!

As sick as this makes us feel, we need to remember, it's a newspaper article from one guys point of view. Maybe it's entirely wrong (don't seem like it though) and has a better side to it. Let's not jump on anyone quite yet.

Having said that, based on the article, the guy should indeed get some jail time and be dropped from the company's roles.

this is unexcusable, the firefighter if found guilty should receive the stiffest penalty. i am hoping this is a one time incident, we are getting too much bad publicity for firefighter's starting fires and all. i know we are infallable as the next person and some people blow off steam in different ways but beating up a person or starting fires.

by the way, did i miss the part where it stated the victim was black, i reread it couple of times and didn't notice it?

Have you met anyone from suburban Pittsburgh? I went to college with some of the boys from that area. They aren't exactly the stereotypical big city folks.:D

As an aside, I was born and raised in the hills of Western Maryland (about 30 miles from West Virginia) and I met more people who fit the definition of "redneck" from the Baltimore suburbs than I ever encountered "out west.":rolleyes:

If you have ever read E.L. Doctrows book RAGTIME,you will find this story is amazingly similar to a storyline in said novel. I am withholding judgement until more facts present themselves.

Redneck or not it still gives us Volunteers one more blemish. Even if there is another side to this story, the damage is done.

When something like this happens you just hope that the person goes down for what they did, and the department has another chance to get straightened out. But there were a couple things that this guy said in his statement, that kinda makes me wonder if there has been an on going problem between him, and the department or acouple of the firemen. never seemed that friendly? I know some people can be real jerks, but I know of NOBODY that cannot overcome something if they are treated nice. What am I saying? Maybe something has gone on before this rival bunch with this guy. But again I don't know. Then I think this guy, and the reporter both have some "political agendas" like the rest of the world. Only black man living in his working neighborhood. Well this makes it seem like this story could be biased, and they are trying to make it a racial issue, I wonder if it will play into that. Looking over his shoulder for volunteer firemen? So this means to me, that he has obviously had an issue with the bunch, OR, he was misquoted. Because not a lot of people will make the distinguishment between volunteer and paid. Ask anybody in Randolph, who covers them for fire protection, and they will say firemen. NOT volunteer firemen. See what I am saying? Then if he would have not said the word volunteer would we be reading the quote " looking over my shoulder watching out for (volunteer) firemen?" I AM NOT MAKING THIS A VOLUNTEER/PAID ISSURE, I am just stating that I think theres some skeletons in the closet that needs to come out before people go down.

I noted the comment about "other problems" at the same fire station, Without taking up for the alleged assailant in any way, could this reporter have an agenda? Hope the court appearance sheds some more light.....Chris, Western Md? Rednecks? Just because I am a member of a very small, very slow,(as in few responses)VFD in Frederick County where we have some mountain property, a few friends decided that I should be referred to as a "Fredneck." I feel for you brother. When I first moved to the "big city" and started my first job I had to deal with questions like "Are you sure you're from the mountains? Both of your legs are the same length!" I was also asked if I rode a mule to school. I worked with one guy from the east side of Baltimore who didn't want to travel west of Carroll County because he was afraid the folks out there would bend him over a log like Ned Beatty in "Deliverence.":rolleyes:

Fireman077, glad you didn't take offense. I went to WVU with guys from North Hills, Penn Hills, and the other sections of Pittsburgh too numerous to mention. A very interesting and diverse group, I must say.
