Well kiddies, this COJ is to be promoted to Lt. effective immediately. I have spent ten years learning the trade and continue to do so. I hope I can be the type of officer who inspires trust and confidence.

Any of you have any advice for a boot Lt???:D

Congrats
A few things to help you out. You can't always be one of the guys any more. They will still respect you if you don't forget where ya' came from.A broke rule ain't a rule anymore.
And remember those you step on going up the ladder will be the ones that have to catch you if you fall.:D (step lightly at times)

Lt. Wayne,

I hope I can be the type of officer who inspires trust and confidence.

You already do ;)

Congratulations on the promotion! The firefighters in your company are lucky to have you.

Thank you all. I just got home from the first officers meeting, and the chief has set some lofty goals for the coming year. Lots of work ahead of us! The only thing that stinks is the helmet!! I have to set aside my 1010 and wear a Bullard Firedome contemporary! It's yellow too! YUK! Oh well, I have already taken the face shield off and put my goggles on it.

I hope I can fill it without FILLING it if ya know what I mean!;)

Spiper- Follow me! (Hey army, what are you doin'? Pick up your tanks and follow me, I am Marine Corps artillery!!)I know, its the army infantry school motto. LOL:D :p

ncfirecapt- you are soooo right about the rules. I am not looking forward to having to enforce them.

Effective immediately; congratulations!
One word of advice: if you have trouble spelling "lieutenant", use the "Lt." abbreviation. Know one will ever know!;)
Way to go.
IMACOJ and proud of it.

So, you've fought your last fire? From here on out you only get the blame, no more credit. The credit goes to your troops.

My best advice:

It's easier to keep 'em out of trouble, than get 'em out of trouble.

Bring 'em all home.

Congratulations, Wayne!

As for the advice...

You are now their leader...you can't say "which way did they go?"

When your personnel test you (and I guarantee you will be tested!), stand your ground.

Respect has to be earned..it can't be demanded.

Don't forget where you came from.

Praise in public, scold in private.

Don't ask your personnel to do anything you wouldn't do yourself.

Lead by example.

Know when the rules can be "flexed" a little.

Take care of your personnel, and they will take care of you.

You now have to look at the "big picture", not have the "moth to the flame" mentality.

When your company has to take a bite of a s**t sandwich, be sure to take the biggest bite.

Everything that gets done is a team effort...leave the I's back where they belong...

A**hole can also be a term of endearment!

When looking for advice to give to others I like to whip out a quick obscure quote and let the person find their own meaning in it. CONGRATULATIONS.

"I like a man who grins when he fights." --Winston Churchill

"The number of medals on an officer's breast varies in inverse proportion to the square of the distance of his duties from the front line." --Charles Edward Montague

Congratulations, Wayne. I'm sure you'll make a great Lt. Hope they don't do to you whay they do to the new lieutenant in my company and saddle you with all the paperwork.:D You've gotten a lot of good advice from the others on here. Can't add much except be a good teacher and a good listener.
