After reading the post about the slide vs. the pole, I was wondering what department has the longest pole in the country. I figure that this fourm was the best place to start because the older set hangs out here :D :D .... I'll start with my station, our pole is 38 feet long and we travel two floors to the apparatus room. the actual ride is 33 feet from the top of the floor.... what a rush:D :D anyone else got a bigger one :eek:

Now medpas, are you trying to determine which is best....the size of the pole or the length of the ride?????????? :D

I'm here just waiting in the wings to make sure all poles are properly serviced and maintained ;)

We had a station here, it was demolished a few years back after a rather nasty kitchen fire, where the pole was 3 floors. Technically only 2 1/2 cause it was just a small storage place (crawl space more or less) on the very top, put they left it open incase the tones went off and someone was up there. I don't know how many ft the pole actually was in length though, I'll look into it.

Strout - that's something you apparently haven't had the chance to see. My guess would be that the 4" pole you observed was "out of service":D It would not have been curved or wet since nobody seems to be using it:D In most cases it's quite easy to put a pole "back into service", but some require more maintenance than others. Once a pole has gotten too old it may require more than just a visit from a "pole maintenance technician", but there are specialists and special devices that can keep any pole in working order indefinitely.
