My department is staring a youth program to try to get more younger members to join the department. We have looked at several of the programs in our area and have sort of mixed and matched the programs to suit our needs. My question is to the departments with a youth program. What I am wondering is what kind of practices do you run with them? What do you let them do at sceens? Do you let them go on ems calls and if so what type? Has this program added to your membership after the leave the program?

Thanks in advance for any of your help.

Depending on where you live, there may be child labor laws that spell out what a junior/explorer can and can not do at training, and on the fire scene.

Pennsylvania has very detailed laws on what junior firemen are permitted to do.

Check w/ the your state's Dept. of Labor to see what the laws are.

Excellent idea. My company runs a junior firefighter program. We take the 15-16 year old members and train them in preperation of turning 18. Like PAVolunteer said, their role is limited on the fireground. Primarily, they work the rehab area, getting drinks, staging tools, etc. Of course, their actual fire duties are nonexistant. But it gives us people who are 18 yo with fireground experience. What better training than watching what will be expected of you? Some of our best firefighters joined as juniors. If I can be of more help, please email me through my profile.

Hang about, back in a minute, just popping into the Fire Explorers and Juniors thread for a second.

Could not find it, who has got the address for the Explorers web site, BSA or what ever it is.
