BEAR WITH ME THIS IS MY FIRST POST. JUST WONDERING WHAT KIND OF FACIAL HAIR RESTRICTIONS OTHER DEPARTMENTS HAVE. WE ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO WEAR A MOUSTACHE. I'M FINE WITH THAT, BUT IT HAS TO STOP AT THE CORNER OF YOUR MOUTH. I'M ALWAYS PUSHING IT BECAUSE WHEN I WAS A KID AND THOUGHT OF A FIREFIGHTER I THOUGHT OF A BIG GUY WITH A HUGE MOUSTACHE. WELL MAYBE I NEED TO GET WITH THE TIMES.... BUT GUYS LIKE DAN NOONAN AND BOB PRESSLER SURE LOOK LIKE FIREFIGHTERS TO ME. JUST WONDERING

Our standards require that hair and facial hair must be worn so as not to be threatening to other employees or the public. (You figure it out, we are still paying the lawyers bills after we tried.) Basically no beards, mustaches may have tails, but they can't extend down to the jaw line(although it has been tested). We are also allowee earings (male and female) although grudgingly. As long as you are way out of line, nobody will say anything...commonsense is the rule.

Our rules are very simple. Facial jewelry will not be worn on duty, you ever seen an ear after the ring was ripped out, damn they bleed.

Facial hair, no male or female will have facial hair long enough to compromise BA operations.

what could be simpler.

In Baltimore County, volunteers can have all the fascial hair they want, but you're "pink tagged" and can't wear a BA or enter a structure. If you want a "white tag" you're limited to a mustache that won't compromise your face piece seal. The rebels among us who drive have beards, but it sort of fouls up your crew for 2 in and 2 out. It's been proposed (only half kiddingly) that we buy electric razors for the engines so these guys can get clean shaven in a hurry if necessary. By the way, the tags refer to what we wear as our personnel accountability system. The designations are as follows:

Pink - probationary (or fascial hair rebel)- no entry to fire building

White - Firefighter, no restrictions on function

Blue - EMS personnel with no firefighter training
