To All Crusty Jakes,
I would like all your opinions on this plan I have . . . Next month, at our annual department meeting, my father (a c.o.j. and former chief himself) will allow his "points" to expire, causing him to loose membership, this is his way of retiring. Also, around the time of the meeting, I will (hopefully) recieve my firefighter I certification. Which will end my probation. This means that I will recieve a department issued leather helmet. SO, here's the question . . . Is it proper to ask our equipment officer to issue me the helmet my father will be turning in after 13+ years on the line? I know he has no plans to not return it, and he is the reason I'm in the fire service so it has sentemental value to me. Just wondering if this is a good idea or not because I respect all of your opinions. Thanks.

Personally , I can't think of a better way to honor your Dad's service and contributions. That's a pretty neat way to carry on the tradition. I don't see a problem with it at all.

Traditions are passed from father to son, and since your dad is retiring and you are geting started, I can't think of a better wat to carry on than with your Dad cow brain bucket!

A wonderful idea. I'm also a tad jealous. My company issues salad bowls. Have to buy your own lid if you want something more traditional. Then they come by every so often and check them for NFPA compliance and try to tell you whether you can wear your own helmet or not.

Steve,
I think that it's a wonderful idea. I think it might carry even more weight with the membership if you dad asked rather than you. They might even be about to have him present it to you at a meeting.

Good luck - glad to hear you following in his bootsteps.

I'm with Ohiovol on this one. Let your Dad ask. I can't see them not allowing it to happen if he asks.
