Brace yourselves here...Old Stayback's going on a mini-vacation. I know..I know...What shall you do without my wit? charm? devasting good looks? Well rest assured, I'll be back. Until then, I leave you in the hands of the Canadians (sort of like a fox guarding the henhouse, but that's the best I could do on short notice). Keep the Faith, I shall return. :)
BTW -- Breaking ground on new station today!!!

Have a good holiday my friend and keep safe.

I have been working on a solution for our little Hen house problem... can't tell you the details just yet, but lets say it may or may not involve small explosives (ok, it does :D).
Stayback, good buddy, have yourself a great vacation, I wish you good luck and sunny days. May your beer stay cold!

Hey 26, we will either have to get Kiwi to come visit or bring Kevin S. back to the hill for that one! Kiwi on account of that he seems to know a lot about "animal behaviour" as opposed to fire behaviour. :D

I think our other good buddy Kevin is MIA... have not heard from him in a while.
As for Kiwi... he is a strange little guy, but I would be more then willing to have him over to our island. However, what are the rules for introducing a foriegn animal into the domestic bio-sphere?
Stayback? this vacation wouldn't put you on the Pacific coast would it? In canada? On a mountain on an Island? Drinking?

Seriously, I did register a long time ago, however posting here has always made me a lil nervous, but 26 told me I needed to start posting more soooooooooooooooooooo here I am, with nothing to say !! He said I should start asking questions and I'd learn something from you all, what he doesn't realize is that I read the posts and learn that way too, so I don't have to think of things to ask.
But I will buy a round when it's my turn, how's that????

The posts from the Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders just verify what I already knew. Americans take life too seriously and we all work just too d**n hard! We should also drink more. I'd relocate, but my wife would want to move where it's warmer (Australia) and I would want to move up north away from the heat (Canada) to get away from this US Mid Atlantic region humidity. Now that is the $64000.00 question. And it is a good point to consider.
FF26 and I had a related conversation this morning regarding our Friend Kiwi. It was directed more to the wide variety of jpg and mpgs that he seems to have readily available for almost any occasion. And Kiwi, we really do appreciate your work in this area, and you can take that one to the Bank!
We were sort of wondering a couple of things:
1) he must have a lot of spare time at home to do this; or
2) the station that he works at doesn't get much in the way of call volume, allowing him a good deal of "research time".
Inquiring minds all over the world are scratching their heads over this one. :)

In my defence.
I work from home (behind the station) doing programming, and stuff of a security nature for my business. So Rush-Hour is a 30 metre walk down the path, and an MVA holdup is caused by the cat lying on the path.
Most of my work is internet related and I have a nine foot satellite dish on the roof with high speed direct connection.
This means I know how to find stuff quickly, as to all the picis recently, I was trying to inject some humor into the threads cause they were getting a bit out of hand.
Thought.
Some people need to relax a bit with personal comments and attacks, others need to engage their brain before jumping in.
I guess that before I answer something I usually think "will this hurt the person" before placing the words.
Disclaimer.
That thought was mine and mine alone, it does not represent the thought of any other person or organisation. It was not intended to imply anyone else was incapable of thought, and should not be misconstrued as to its message. Use of this thought by anyone else for media releases must be cleared with the original thinker. This was one of a series of thoughts, and if reproduced it must be reproduced in full.
It took me a long time to type this because NJFFS_A16 put the national anthem on, I had to listen to it at attention, and the damn thing kept repeating every two minutes. ( Thanks NJFFS_A16 it's great)
Also you can tell the kiwi tracks in the hen house, the foot print leaves a deeper impression, mainly because they are carrying hens out.
I will now save smillies etc for exceptionally special occasions.
Oh wait, this is an occasion....

Four hockey fans are moutain climbing. Each climber happens to be a rabid fan of a different NHL team. As they climb higher and higher, they argue more and more about which of them is the most loyal to their particular team. Finally, as they reach the summit, the climber from Vancouver takes a running leap and throws himself off the mountain, yelling "This is for the Vancouver Canucks!". Not wanting to be outdone, the climber from Calgary throws himself off the mountain, shouting "This is for the Calgary Flames!". Seeing this, the Toronto climber walks to the edge of the precipice, yells "This is for the Toronto Maple Leafs!" and pushes the guy from Ottawa off the cliff.

Well, thank you all for brightening my day. Unfortunately, I have to go to work now to pay the bills.
Temptaker, the seperate vacations are an idea, and you might have trouble getting me back to the states. Actually, my wife and I have a wish list of places to go. She's the one who has been to Canada (Montreal). She has also spent a week in the Czech Republic and lived in Hong Kong as a child. She's the world traveler. My intenational travel consists of a trip to Ireland for a week in '96. Since I tend to like to go places where I can actually talk to the natives without sounding like a total fool, your fair country, the Aussies and the Kiwis are on the travel list, among others. I am going to California for a week at the end of July, and that will probably seem like a foriegn country. Realistically, Canada is the most doable for a number of reasons, the main one being a 2 and 4 year old who will require a college education at some point, and that isn't cheap. Western Canada also has potential because we both like to ski. We're not great at it, but we try. I've been told of you can ski on the ice of Vermont and Maine, which we have, you can ski anywhere. Now we just have to teach the kids how to ski and enjoy the cold.

Obviously not a "save", huh? Bad part was that radiant heat destroyed several other buildings as well, and burning bourbon ran into nearby streams and flowed fire all over the place.
Can you imagine?
The bourbon stored in the warehouses was actually a higher proof than what retails. It is distilled, aged, and then watered down a little before sale. Takes less storage space that way, but also makes fires even worse.
I think there were 30-some FD's involved in the response.

The Aussies got peeved because we would not allow more than 12 teams in the Super 12 contest (round robin series between NZ, Aus, and South African regional teams)
So they are hosting the whole world cup by themselves. Kinda like throwing all your toys out of the cot.
Try www.nzoom.com they have it live on the net for a lot of games, and is a good catch up site for local things. It is run by TV 1 and 2.
How come the rugby World Cup involves heaps of countries, and the baseball World Cup only one. Never been able to figure that out.

CJMinick390... ah she was in Montreal. Well that explains everything. (no insults intended to the French speaking Canadians here) It is much warmer here in the winter, and even though we are the rainy city the humidity is actually less then in Montreal. When it gets hot or cold it is easier to tolerate. When you come you should bring her. It's quite beautiful here. I've got some pics somewhere ... hmmm... when I remember where I've put the disk I'll send you an email (unless anyone else wants to see what Vancouver looks like) with some pics if you like.
EastKyFF... Damn.... I love my Wild Turkey. I can only imagine what it would have been like to see the "streams" lighting up. Must have been spectacular... scary but still quite something to see. I didn't see the article, I hope that no one was hurt.

Best of my knowledge, no injuries at either fire. Hard to get burned when the radiant heat is like that...didn't go to either fire, had just moved away from the area when HH burned; my old FD lapped in to Bardstown but didn't go to scene. Exposures were far, far, far away and still burned. Flames were invisible in some spots, I believe.
Yep, looks like alcohol abuse to me.

There is a simple explanation. StayBack...having had a close encounter with an inanimate traffic control device...becomes very apprehensive when he approaches intersections. He slows the car to 5 MPH...looks for approaching stop signs...and then continues.
It's slowed his trip considerably! And then...when he sees sheep along the road........

firefighter26
06-09-2002, 12:04 AM
Come gather around ya'll and I shall share with you the story of Stayback vs the stop sign....
As a well-trained, dedicated, and decorated officer that StayBack is, he is sometimes forced to make difficult decisions that sometimes place personnel in dangerous settings. He has always said that he'd never ask a firefighter to do something he wouldn't do himself... so as a display of heroic bravery he took it upon himself to step forth from his lofty officer's seat on his engine and tread perilously into the dark unknown to upright a STOP sign. He did this so that motorists would have something to run through as they rubbernecked at all the fallen trees and structural damage. After carefully bending the sign to 3/4 upright, his wet gloves failed to hold their grip and TWWWWAAAAAANNNGGGGG!!!! the savvy old veteran took one for the team!! From 0 to 60 in less than a minute, he had a face full of sign.
That is the story, go forth and share it with your fellow brothers and never forget the lesson that the brave stayback learned... never punch a stop sign after it hits you in the face....:D :p

Stay back has been gone for 6 whole days.

Hfd66, I think that you might be a little off base on the Guinness situation. Of course I can't speak for every station and every district, however we here on the hill have an wonderful event that happens twice each day.
A 5 ton Guinness truck goes north each morning around 630am and returns around 1600 each afternoon. I know cuz I meet it going up and down almost every day. :) :)
It has been a bad wish (is there such thing?) that the Guinness truck would experience a threeway MVA with the Bacardi truck and the coke truck. Extrication would not be a problem, however the loads may not match to the original mainfest, on account of spillage and damage to the loads on impact.
"Ooops, sorry guys, honest, we don't know what happened to the contents of your trucks - really we don't." :D

Great Lakes Area Sheep At Risk?
Copyright 2002 Crusty Press International
Nervous breakdown? Tourette’s Syndrome? Paranoid Schizophrenia? What is wrong with Great Lakes area sheep?
Farmers as far north as Canada have found an unexplained phenomenon among their sheep stock over the last 6 days. It seems that many are visibly shaking, and turn toward the slightest noises. Entire flocks have taken to forming circles facing outward, much like the defensive maneuvers taken by wagon trains of the old west when attacked while on the trail. The flocks move as one, and nearly all seem to be in a heightened state of agitation. They behave as if threatened by some unknown force.
Veterinarians have no idea what may be causing such behavior. Some are consulting animal behavior experts, yet still have no answers. One farmer however has what he thinks are some of the answers relating to this odd behavior. He reports that he believes there is some kind of “extraterrestrial” activity related to this behavior, as he recently saw a creature with a reportedly octagonal shaped face/head stalking his flock. When he frightened the creature, it ran away and hasn’t been seen in that area since. As he neared an intersection he nearly ran into a traffic control sign, but changed his course, running into the woods screaming for what seemed like several minutes as he ran away. Wittnesses stated that he almost seemed frightened by the sign.
Another farmer had a chance encounter with what he believes was some kind of “gang member” as he had something resembling the letters “P-O-T-S” stenciled on his forehead. The letters appeared as though they were stenciled backward however. This is felt to be a result of some unknown gang “tagging” done as part of the ritual.
Whatever the reason for this aberrant behavior, officials are unsure if they will ever get to the bottom of it. Anyone having further information should contact their local law enforcement officials or Farm Bureau.

Cows Vanish In Eagle County
Deputies Vow To Solve Bovine Mystery One Way Or The Udder
Nobody has been able to figure out why, but a lot of cows are missing on the Western Slope.
At least 37 cows have disappeared from herds in the Burns, Colo., area recently and the Eagle County Sheriff's Office is exploring all possibilities.
So far, they've ruled out alien abductions.
Ranchers Pat Luark, Bill Nottingham and Rod Schlegel all reported losses from their herds.
Luark reported that he is missing 11 cows and 11 calves, amounting to $20,000.
Nottingham is missing two Angus bulls and five cows. Schlegel is missing about seven animals.
The possibilities include rustlers or natural predators, according to the sheriff's office.
Still, Schlegel says the area where the cows disappeared is pretty wild. “Things can happen out there and they never appear again," he said.

Tallapoosa, Missouri Man Arrested for Posing as Rescuer
TOBERMORY, Ontario (AP) -- A man accused of impersonating an Army officer and taking control of rescue efforts after a bridge collapse in Oklahoma was arrested Sunday by Canadian police.
Ontario Provincial Police arrested William Clark, 29, of Tallapoosa, Mo., on fraud and theft charges Sunday as he waited to board a ferry in Tobermory, Canada.
Clark was wanted by the FBI for showing up in Webbers Falls, Okla., within two hours of the Interstate 40 bridge collapse over the Arkansas River, and claiming he was a captain with U.S. Special Forces.
Clark is accused of getting free food, lodging and transportation by impersonating a military officer.
He also is facing charges under the Canada Immigration Act.
He is scheduled to appear in an Owen Sound, Ontario, court Monday. Clark was released from the Central Missouri Correctional Center on Dec. 11 after serving three years for stealing, said Tim Kniest, spokesman for the Missouri Department of Corrections. Clark also served two years of probation in 1999 for passing bad checks, Kniest said.
A barge struck the bridge May 26, sending 10 vehicles into the river and killing 14 people.

DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRALS!! :( And I'll bet they didn't even share either.
About those missing cows and bulls... what would the odds be that Stayback in a fit of confusion brought on by his encounter with the Stop Sign, mixed up sheep for cows? Apart from the obvious difference in size, they are a four legged animal, and I guess if it was shearing season, you might make a mistake, if you were in a slighly(?) confused state of mind.

I just received this over the pager:
There has been a sighting report made by a distraught citizen in the
Malahat region of British Columbia, Canada!
Apparently a farmer, while riding her horse along Aitken Rd, Malahat, BC had a very strange encounter with what she describes as a "Tallish fellow with some sort of weird tatoo or stamp across his forehead." She stated that the "tatoo" looked faded, but she was able to make out what appeared to be the letters T and O, she thinks that there may have been a S and possibly a P on either side, but that they looked like they were printed backwards and were badly faded out. The man appeared to be inspecting a stop sign on Aitken Rd that some residents have claimed is "illegally placed".
As she approached him, he was muttering something about "...stayback
500...." and ".... stupid stop signs...."
When she offered assistance, he turned to her, screamed "THE SHEEP, THE SHEEP!", and ran off into the woods.
The Farmer, who wishes to remain nameless, is very concerned about this incident. She states that she does not have any sheep on her farm, but she does have a couple of cows and a llama or two.
Apparently Firefighter 26 from the Fire Dept is attempting to verify and will report back his findings.
This is intended as humour and if anyone has any ill feelings regarding it, I will remove it without question.

Welcome back Stayback. For the "official record" I would like to say that FF26 and I tried our utmost to keep the peace, while providing a stable platform in which the Forums population could seek solace during your absence. Betcha never expected to have a response to one post as you have had for this one eh?
WE MISSED YA MAN!! :D

I don't know where Stayback is now, but I know he was in Hinckley recently. The following evidence comes from ChiefReason. Look closely at the stop sign, of all things.... (and pay no attention to the graffiti CR sprayed above the heads):

We just had a call for an MVA. On arrival there were skid marks and nothing else. However, the stop sign was sheared off and missing. Coincidence?

July 11th, 2003. Alert the National Guard.....he's been missing for almost thirty days!
StayBack's last post was 06-12-2003 02:35 PM. I've notified NJ Search and Rescue, along with our detection helicopters and the State Police to check the NJ/PA border for mutilated stop signs.
The only description we have of the missing firefighter is as follows:
6 feet tall male, wearing bunker pants, coat, boots and a cracked helmet...no goggles. He may be driving a big, red truck. The party in question should have the following word imprinted on their forehead.
POTS
in white letters with a red background. Anyone seeing someone matching this description....please notify IACOJ investigators on these forums.
Approach with caution. This person may be incoherent and semi-concious, due to an encounter with a traffic control device.

Maybe, we can use the the stopsign. It might still have some scent lingering on it that the dogs can track?
