***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***

for April 23rd:

1912: The High Pressure Pumping Service Pumping Station was placed in active service - Located on the west side of South St, north of Pratt St & extending through to Hunter Alley, Downtown East - It is (was) a 2 story & gallery brick fireproof building 69.5'x137', costing $152,091 & the lot $32,633 - The complete pipeline was designed & constructed by Daniel B. Banks, costing $596,019 - On 8/28/1973, the High Pressure Service Pumping Station was relocated into the sub-basement of the new John Steadman "Superhouse" @ Lombard & Eutaw Sts, Downtown West - Service is now discontinued. (TUH*CHM2)

1940: 4 Alarms - Box#514 - 0424hrs - Pratt & Paca Sts - Downtown Southwest - Fire involved the 3 story brick George F. O'Brecht Grain warehouse - Yellow acrid smoke was billowing from the 3 story brick building & 4 alarms were sounded during the next half hour by DC-1, George D. Otter - (4) Salvage Corps regularmen were trapped on the 2nd floor & stood on the window ledge until firefighters placed ladders for them to climb down to safety - After an hour of pouring tons of water into the burning structure, a decided bulge was noticed in the west wall & the Members of T-6 were ordered to untangle & remove the hose lines on its extended 85' Hayes aerial ladder before it could be lowered - (4) firefighters climbed up to the rooftop & as they reached it there was a terrible roar & the wall came tumbling down, pulling the roof with it & sending a flash of fire 50' into the air - @ the same time the south wall crashed down, going outward into the back alley (Dover St) crushing T-1 to the ground - For a moment, T-6's Hayes aerial ladder with (4) firefighters on it stood straight & still, then slowly began to bend as the brace ladder was being buried deeper in the rubble of the fallen wall, then it snapped off @ the turntable, throwing the (4) firefighters into the blazing inferno - Captain Joseph A. Gallion & all available firefighters jumped into the crater & disregarding their own lives, tore away bricks & debris despite the fire burning all around them, & uncovered & removed the unconscious firefighters - Firefighter Herman W. Jackson, T-6, who was @ the top of the aerial ladder, suffered internal injuries & multiple broken bones & died that evening @ University of Maryland Hospital - He was 37 years old with 14 years in the fire service & was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery on 4/26 - Firefighter John Rudolph received a broken nose, pelvis, & shoulder, Firefighter Leonard Hoogeboom a broken wrist & lacerations, & Firefighter Charles Gentry a broken leg - Firefighter Charles Hiltz, George Dennis, Harvey Christ, & Stanley Meyers, E-2, received injuries while fighting the fire & Firefighter Joseph Mannon & John Koutnik, T-6, had a narrow escape from death as they jumped from the lower rungs of the breaking ladder - In fact, the same members of T-6 cheated death just the day before when they were trapped during the fire @ Box#62. (TUH*CHM1)

1967: 3 Alarms - Box#181 - 1200 S Decker Ave - Canton (Southeast Baltimore) - Fire involved vacant sheds. (CHM1)

1993: 1 Alarm + (2) Task Forces - Box#256 - 0126hrs - 1316 Ensor St - Northeast Of Downtown - Fire involved a 2 story brick rowhouse - This dwelling served as a home for (10) people, (9) of them children - @ approximately 0100hrs, 1 of the children, a teenager, went to the basement with a brother to light the pilot light on the furnace - While attempting to light the pilot with a piece of paper, he accidently set some nearby trash on fire - As his brother ran to get water to put out the growing fire, he tried to slap the fire out with his shirt - He only fanned the fire - He ran upstairs to warn the family & left the cellar door open - The fire followed him & grew in intensity - (4) neighborhood men tried to enter the dwelling, but were kept back by the fire & smoke - (2) Eastern District Police Officers tried to enter through a 2nd floor window but to no avail - (5) children, ages 2 through 6 were found dead - The fire spread to 1314 & 1316 Ensor St & (2) firefighters were injured - (Note: Companies with a "*" have since been disbanded) 1st alarm @ 0126hrs = *E-19*, E-6, *E-32*, T-5, T-1 (Snorkel), *Aerial Tower-111*, Fire Investigation Bureau #4, AirFlex-2 (Now Air Cascade-2), Rescue-1, Medic-7, Medic-1, Medic-16, & BC-2 - Task Force-24 @ 0137hrs = *E-24*, E-33, T-16, EMS Super-4, & EMS Super-4 - Task Force-38 @ 0146hrs = *E-38* from E-6, E-13, T-15, Car 60 & 62 (Police Arson), Medic-10, Medic-3, Medic-4, & BC-5 - Fire under control @ 0225hrs.
