I think it's time for a new firefighters organization...the IACOJ... short for

International
Association
of
Crusty
Old
Jakes

Membership requirements are as follows:

* An appreciation of the job, respect for those who did the job while you were still in diapers and the sacrifices made by those who preceeded us.

* A willingness to honor the past, think outside of the box, challenge the future, train and learn new stuff (in other words....building more crust! :D)

* A willingness to take the next generation under your wing and show them the true path to firefighting enlightenment...making them "pup proof"

* A dislike for "mutts".

* A love of leather helmets! :D (it's okay if you don't have one, ya just gotta love them! :D)

* Doing your time as a "lower than whale scat probie" without complaints or regrets.

* Crawling down a long, smokey hallway with zero visibility.

* Knowing what it's like to be on the other side of an opposing hose stream.

* Working together to make the job better rather than fight among each other!

* Respecting each other in the true spirit of brotherhood/sisterhood.

:D PS: you don't have to be crusty and old to join...just be willing to make the transformation! :D

I only have a shell that will crack when hit with a mild amount of force, not necessarily a crust. I noticed you said you don't have to be old and crusty. What is the minimum amount of time to be on the job before you can join? Can I include my time in the Marines? If so I'll be crusty as Hell.

Sounds like a cool organization, but I don't have the certs.

I guess my job as a junior would be serving IACOJ members coffee, and washing their POVs...That is, if Captain Gonzo's Chapter is anything like the one we have here...

I'm in, Gonz. Let me get my cotton-jacketed 1 1/2 with brass couplings (remember rolling it after each use, taking it back to the firehouse and washing it, then hanging it in the hose tower to dry?) with the Navy All-Purpose nozzle. Oh, and the Low Velocity Fog Applicator for vehicle fires.

For advancing the hose up the fire escapes, I'll bring the ceiling and shepherd hook, too.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane (what I remember of it!!)

Forget that mates! These ole crusty buggars need some new blood(in a respectful way-berefit of the years and years and years of service!). Grab the meter, kill the gas, ladder the windows, start venting, get the PPV blowin'-and fer Chrissakes, rookster, get your arse in there and do a search!

Being new ain't bad, forgetting how things go-how they were done-and how they need to be done-is very, very bad...Besides,hanging around all the crusty fellas day in and day out-you kinda get crusty by default....

I, as the house rookie, have the most sacred and important duty.Neither runs, ems or fire-shoveling of the apron-cleaning of the apparatus-daily drills-and any other duty, administrative or otherwise, emergent or not-shall keep me from.

Capt., Can we get all the young, new guys together and tell our stories about when we didn't use or have airpacks? Bring in our pull up boots for show and tell? Transformation is a hell of a thing, especially when you realize how much things have changed in the last thirty years.

Everyone should be proud of the FF's before us, the FF's now, and the FF's still to come. Its not a job for everyone, and everyone who chooses it has to be special.

All the posts prior to mine have taken most of the good jobs, so sign me up and tell me what's left to be done. I'll take whatever job is left.

lol....Sounds like a good idea but I think you should add a couple things:
*have worked on a Brushfire all day long sweating your ass off hiking up and down the mountain with a load on your back weighing more than you do,for 8 hours or more straight/when nightfall arrives and the temperature drops about 30 degrees(and you freeze your butt off)-not to mention the fact you didnt get lunch and by the time your crew hikes down off the hill all of the Engine companies sitting in staging ATE ALL THE DAMN FOOD!
Maybe then they would respect the Wildland Firefighters more too..but its just a thought...

I've had my share of that kind of firefighting, and you can have it. I've got all the respect in the world for you folks. They pretty much fixed any desire I had to fight wildfire when I was told on one of my last woodland fires to be careful because they had seen a lot more poisonous snakes out than they had seen in a long time, and that the fire was making them aggressive.

They haven't seen aggressive until they come within my reach with a Brush Axe. I don't like snakes even a litle bit! I'm just glad that my area doesn't cover any wildland area...yet.

Therefore I respectfully submit my Application in the hopes that I get assigned to the Highway Rescue where I will do my best to "pop" doors and remove roofs. Damn I love cutting cars. I noticed no one has taken up the Jaws, I prefer the combie-tool myself.

At this time, I wish to humbly submit my application to the I.A.C.O.J.

While not old, or particularly crusty, (30 with 5 years in the fire service) I would love the opportunity to learn from the truly old, crusty Jakes among us. With my relative lack of age & experience, I believe I would be well qualified for any of the following positions:

Cleaning the kitchen, washing dishes for SuperChef; Latrine duty; Washing trucks; rolling and loading hose; filling air bottles; cleaning bunker gear; supplying ice cream; etc.

I would be honored to provide these services in exchange for the opportunity to crawl down the long smoky hallway with the Crusty Old Ones.

I'm in and I qualify in all respects. 21 1/2 years and still goin strong. I hope there is still room on the tailboard, cause my best memories predate jumpseats (in our department).

Wonder how many can remember drivers who gingerly drove the front wheels over the curb then put the pedal to the medal, slammin the tailboard jockeys.

I never wanted in the cab and still don't! When I die they can tie my box to the tailboard, back me up to my favorite fishin hole and the trip to heaven will be that much shorter,

I would also like to join. I think you need someone to keep the parade carriage clean and the kerosene lamps full. I started out riding on the tailstep, pulling 2 1/2" bullcock hose with brass couplings, I did salvage with old canvas tarps that were dated in the 20's. Hell, we even got a 1957 American LaFrance still in service, we got a museum on wheels.

Seriously, I have 13 years in the fire service, I have been a dispatcher for 10 of those. I have nothing but love for the cameraderie and the tradition of being a firefighter. Thank you for your consideration! Leather forever (I got 3 of 'em!)

Captain Gonzo, I would also like to apply for membership in I.A.C.O.J. I've been chasing the "big red trucks" since I was about five years old (ever since my dad told me stories about being an ARFF in the Marines during the Korean War) when my town's volunteer company ran open cab Seagraves and a BRUCO squad. Grew up, went to college and got an engineering degree. Moved to the suburbs of the "big city" and joined the local volunteer fire company. Been there for 18 years now with a short period of inactivity when I started a family.

I've seen my share of fire, got banged up (minor) a few times, served as an ALS provider and EMT for awhile 'til the requirements to keep certifications became overwhelming time wise. Still certified as a First Responder, Firefighter II (IFSTA standard), current with HazMat Operations, and serve as a Structure Specialist for the Maryland Task Force One FEMA USAR team. Still wash the trucks, sweep the floors, check the equipment on the rigs at least once a week, and try to pound some sense of duty, knowledge, and tradition into the new generation (sometimes they make me feel very old). Would love to have a leather helmet, but the family budget won't allow it, so I use a traditional fiberglas. Hope this qualifies me to be a member. I certainly do enjoy the comments and knowledge shared by the members. I might be able to make some limited contributions as well.

Later on I had written most of it out on paper. It was pretty good from what I remember, I hope to find it and post it some day.

That's right ladies and gentlemen ...... I'm here and I humbly submit my application to this fine orginization. There is truly wisdom within these pages and I am glad to see some old friends. (For those who are thinking it obviously I'm not dead or anything else.;) )

Gonzo....you da' man!

LadyCapn....where's FireMe? I thought for sure he'd be in this "organized chaos".

I'll take the 24 volt sawzall and 6 volt hand lantern and my 3/4 black coat with corduroy collar and meat you all there. (I'll be the one on the tailboard of the canopy cab 78 ALF still smokin, grunting, and rollin, with it's unsychronized 5 speed!!! Grunt here.)

I am still reading the various other threads on these pages so give me some time to catch up on the history.

Long live the CRUST!:D

Well, I have been in and out of the Forums for over a year and a half now, and with my dept for just two years. Most of my firefighting experience is 5 years onboard navy ships and 15 years total military time, but the concepts are the same.

I therefore humbly make formal application for memebership into the IACOJ. I promise to serve to the best of my abilities, and to support my fellow brothers and sisters of the Fire Service.

I think I caught the same thing captstanm1 has. I could have sworn I applied once before...

Here's my resume:

1989 Joined VFD
1990-1993 worked as an emt at the county ambulance dist.
1993-1995 worked as a deputy sheriff (i know big mistake!) :)
1995-1998 industrial firefighter for a major car manufacturer
1998-present 911 dispatcher (the money was too good to pass up!)

On my VFD, I have worked my way from probie/pup to currently, Deputy Chief (2nd in command).
Also 2nd Trustee of the "Gateway FOOLS"

I was the first in the district to break away from the norm and bought myself a traditional helmet (Cairns 880) now I wear a leather and I will never go back! I believe in the "brotherhood" and am currently teaching our "pups" what that means.

This is my application for membership. I'm old enough to be a crusty, and dedicated enough, even if my years in the fire service aren't many. I believe the following incident proves it.

I was sound asleep in bed. The tones went off, I jumped into my gear and ran for the garage, got in my POV and headed for the station. However, my pager wasn't making any noise-- there was no radio traffic. Maybe it was the battery door. I drove past the captain's house-- his car was still in the driveway. So, when I went past the EMS Director's, was hers. Finally I got to the point where I had a view of the App Room. The engine was still in the station, doors closed. I picked up my Minitor-- still no radio traffic. The battery door was shut. I drove to the station-- maybe there weren't any chauffeurs on, and the resident "kids" had taken the 4x4. Nope. All asleep in their little beds.

I'd dreamt the tones.

While not exactly a crusty by age, I qualify based on a respect for the traditions of those that have gome before me and shown me the ropes.

I can also engineer a 1950's vintage Ahrens-Fox Quad (with an open cab and plenty of tailboard to ride on).

captstanm1
07-20-2002, 11:21 AM
Captain Gonzo

No....My radio designation is Dc28A2 ...(dont ask!! )

The M = 1st initial of my last name
1 = used to be captstanm@****.com and changed accounts so just added the "1" to keep it close.

Thats my story and I am sticking to it!

Cash or charge for the "Crustometer"?:D D/C or A/C???? or gas powered?

CaptainGonzo
07-20-2002, 03:47 PM
Crustometer payment: I was hoping that we could get one donated... the security, food and liquor costs for 26's bachelor bash have seriously impacted the IACOJ ca$h flow!

Since the IACOJ is non profit any donation can be written off on taxes. ;)

When all else fails, use plastic! :D

Bi-power is fine...not that there's anything wrong with that! A gas powered crustometer would be a tad too bulky to cart around.

Crust-o-meter issue has been handled. All candidates will have to pass by Motown. If he does not rip their heads off, then they will be deemed crusty enuf. Never let it be said that the BMI can't improvise, adapt and overcome. Oh yeah, Adze will be in charge of the cleaning up after those who don't pass the test.

College Student/Vollie FF here.

Just wondering, IACOJ members, if there's a need for a historian to nail all these tidbits and whale stories to the ground?

Yeah, the two year rook over here in the corner may be young and stubborn, but he does know pumping and driving, so give him a chance... if nothing else he'll keep the axes and saws sharpened and can serve as a punching bag when things get slow
;)

So here's the needed info:

Years in Fire Service: 2

Firefighter 1
Pump Operator
Haz-Mat Operations
USFS Red Card
ARC First Aid & CPR Instructor
Eagle Scout, Boy Scouts of America

I drive a c. 1980 Mack Fire Engine with a 2000 GPM Waterous Pump. No jake brake on it, but I do have 150' of Cotton Jacket line w/ brass couplings that is still serviceable on it.

What I study in College? History.

So, mayhaps there's an opening for an assistant to the IACOJ Ministry of Propaganda?

Let me know guys, and thanks for being there... from all of us "pups" who want to be real firemen.

Folks,
I don't know if I ever officially applied to the IACOJ, so here's my app. Please let me know if it shows enough crust:

1983(ish): joined my 1st volunteer FD
1984: got my FF 1-A (Ohio volunteer certification) and EMT. Rode tailboard occasionally when our reserve engine was 1st out. Remember using the demand & pressure switch on my SCBA.

1986: moved to 2nd vol FD (moved from apt. to house). Had pull-up boots briefly. In the 5 years I spent with this dept. got my EMT-Intermediate, fire inspector, & CPR instructor certs. Learned a ton about running tanker shuttles. Was an A/C & training officer for most of the time.

1991: moved to 3rd vol FD (new house, more land). Got my FF1 & 2 certs, fire & EMT instructor certs, basic arson investigation cert. Was a captain & training officer most of the time. President of co. EMS org. Partially responsible for highlighting problems with Ohio EMS agency. Steamer may remember those bad old days - maybe even read the article I wrote in the state EMS mag.

2000: moved to 4th vol FD (new house, less land - what can I say, new family and still supporting my kids). Got my medic.

Skeletons in the closet:
- I like Guiness and know where to get it on tap, but I like Christian Moerlein better.
- I've never worn a leather helmet. It's never been an option anywhere I've run.

Mr. Pres: crusty enough????

Captian Gonzo and IACOJ members.

Drewbo again, I brought a cellar nozzle back on page 6. But I would like to formally apply to the IACOJ. Volunteer firefighter at home and college (that is hard getting the right balance of Frat parties and Fire Training) since 1996 when I turned 18. Firehouse Forums member since April 1999 (been around these parts before it really got started). Currently a combat arms LT in the Army’s First Cavalry Division, that would make me the best candidate to kick an Al Qaeda in the a$$. But I need to get back to firefighting again (nobody told me the word office was in officer, and not wearing a leather helmet kills me), am taking more education to better prepare myself, and now FEMA classes also. Hopefully my leadership skills learned in the Army will help me lead in firefighting. Proud Pennsylvania Volunteer, saw and learned a lot, both good and bad. Hope to get paid to do it someday.

What I bring to the table; If the Cav goes to war, I’ll give one poor terrorist some payback for all our New York brothers. And I love the Penguin!

Very Respectfully, Drewbo, candidate for membership.

Dear esteemed colleagues of the IACOJ, I hearby submit my formal application for membership:

7/27/91 Recieved my EMT (no "-B") certification. Worked for a private ambulance service.
6/92 Started as a volunteer EMT with a 911 service in Montgomery County, PA., rising to the rank of Cheif Engineer. (crust starting to form)
8/19/95-8/11/02 Accepted a possition as an EMT with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Emergency Pediatric and Neo-natal Transport Team (long name, harder job) working beside Pediatric Critical Care RN's and Pediatricians, stablizing and transporting everything from micro-premies to severe traumas. (As of writing this resume I am spending my last night in this job...My crust in this position was getting getting to be suffocating :( ) Rule #1 in this job: children die...Rule #2 no matter how skilled we are or how fast we drive, we can't change rule #1.
2/95 Became a volunteer firefighter for Cheltenham Hook and Ladder Co.1, at the urging of my best freind. (Dark, smokey crust begining to form over the other crust)
8/13/02 Beginning work as an Emergency Dispatcher for CHOP's Transport Team (New electrifed crust beginning to take shape :D ).

I hope that membership and Crust is sufficient enough to meet your high standards.

Gratefully, Halligan

I lost five in transport in one day on my last 12-hour shift... walked into the office at the end of the day and quit. Some things are too tough to handle... :(

My worst week, I lost nine kids over four nights. I took a month off and my wife (who also works @ CHOP) and I went on a long trip just driving through New England. It definetly helped to refresh both of our batteries.:)

I would like to join this esteemed and indeed crusty organization.

Let's see, 19 years in the fire service, Got my leathers (boots and helmet),got my old black cotton duck gear in the closet, remember when the SCBA stayed in the case...(I guess air cost more then so they wouldn't let us use 'em)Still got a Bresnan nozzle on the engine got a Detroit door opener on the equipment truck (the newcomers don't know what that is I bet) and enough loyalty for my brothers to travel 12 hours on a train to go to funerals for the brothers in the FDNY (ate with E-94 & L-48 in the Bronx...them brothers can COOK.)

I respectfully submit this application and request if approved to have the honor of ringing the big bell on the way to the scene if that job ain't taken yet. (I know a C.O.J Engine has just got to have a big silver bell on the bumper)

Wayne,

The patch I originally did was intended as an "International" one. Perhaps if DFD would like to collaborate with me, we can come up with some patches for specific countries as well :)

Oh, I also need to know how many countries the BMI is in, we only have vehicles for the US and Canada currently. ;) Didn't get a response about the 'black ops' vehicle, so I haven't started on it yet.

Let me know what I can do to help.

I do belive that the patches should be the same
with the different counties names on the bottom.
after all as "old crusties" id-ing the patch should
be made easy. It also would make them worth collecting.

Just my opinion thought.

Found the URL in the Rev's signature. www.cafepress.com/firerev

Besides the CD Leather, I can bring my Johnson pump can, Navy lantern with dry cell batteries, two 1-1/4" Underwriters Pipes, several Carbon Tet Extinguishers, and "Old Thumper" (Engine with a piston pump). "Old Thumper" was my second truck. The first had a rotary pump and no relief system.

President Gonzo and the elite IACOJ members,

Please accept my application for membership into your prestige's organization. I have enjoyed reading and speaking with you over the last year, and hope that my replies have at least been entertaining, if not informational.

I have 23 years in as a firefighter, the last 7 as the Training Officer. I have two three-ring binders filled with certifications and diplomas, but not one of those damn things have ever shown up on an emergency scene to help out  . What I can offer is this:

1) Undying loyalty to an organization and its members.
2) A great wit and the ability to look at other perspectives
3) I teach live fire training in many venues at least 4 times a
month, so the crust comes in handy.
4) Starbucks coffee to go with the Philly Cheesesteaks
5) I do have a leather helmet (it sits on a shelf because I destroyed
it in a flashover trailer)

If I may be so bold, I noticed you have yet to assign someone to the IACOJ Volcanic Rescue Team. Being from Washington State, I would love to take this on.

Awaiting your reply,

OK OK OK...

After reading the posts of the IACOJ, and having several legal beverages in the comfort of my own home (with the pager turned off to eliminate any temptation to be on the first call of the new year) and a bit of a longing to join another group to share experiences with, I hereby submit my meager application to the august body that is the IACOJ. My experience spans fourteen years and includes military, volunteer and paid firefighting service. I am also a paramedic in an ambulance corps and a code enforcement officer. About the only things I haven't done in public safety is dispatch and police work. I collect fire truck models and other antique memorabilia. The special skill that I would hope to bring to the group is the uncanny ability to identify almost any fire apparatus just by looking at it.

Thank you for your consideration.

IACOJ,

I will once again submit my application for acceptance in
your organization.

I now have only 3 years on,

I unfortunately do not have a leather.

I have been down the smokey halls, been in the rain cutting people out of the mangled mass that was a car, I have seen the pain in peoples eyes as they watch us try to save their family members.

I have the utmost respect for this job, and I love to do it.

I offer loyalty and dedication, the willigness to learn from any of those willing to teach, and respect for those that have went before me.

Please consider my application I would be honored to be part of this organization.

I'm hardly 'truly crusty' with a mere 15 years as a firefighter and a paramedic, but I'm working on it.

I have a leather in need of repair so I'm consigned to the ranks of Tupperware-wearers for the moment.

I have traversed the dark, smoky hallways as recently as 13 hours ago.

Thanks for your consideration.
