As food is a big thing in the fire house, what are some of the kind of dinners you all make?
And what is the typical cost for the meals?

Sometimes on Sunday our LT. cooks dinner for us. The last time he had something it was pork tenerion with mashed potoases and other good stuff. But if the guys get hurnary and not late long we usaly call a place in Westville call Ritas Steak House and they have great food. We usually have ritas pizza after out dept drills.

Today it was tacos for lunch and Steak for dinner. The whole day was $ 8.50. We got interrupted at lunch but managed to wolf down dinner and still have time to B.S. and enjoy the fact that we are truly blessed to be firefighters. A firehouse cooked meal beats the pants off of carry-out food hands down. (cheaper too!) :p

Here in Cajun Country, we pride ourselves on Gumbo's, Crawfish Etouffee', and of course Crawfish boils. We eat alot of rice and gravy, chicken. If it crawls, swims or flies, we'll eat it.:D

We get a $7 a day food allowance from the good city. Lots of chicken, hamburgers, fries and porkchops get eaten here. But none of that stuff goes anywhere near my plate. No meat for me! (Am I the only vegetarian firefighter in the world? never met another one...)

I like steak, burgers, tacos, pizza and anything else. I have a simple philosophy that I live by; "As long as it makes a turd I don't care what it is!"

I like that about the cajun guy, your food moving....

You name it we have cooked it. From stuffed porkchops to duck to meatloaf. Everyone has thier own specailty and we have alot of different ethnic backgrounds which makes for some good eating. Every once and a while someone brings in meat from a hunting or fishing trip. We have a Lt who makes killer beef jerky at the sta. For someones birthday I have seen a cake shaped like a part of the male anatomy(what do you expect from firefighters). We usualy go $10 a day for meals which ofcourse includes desert. After dinner we go out to the back patio and have a cigar and B.S.

Traditionally, the drivers have always been the cooks around here. However, changes in manpower and minimum staffing have led us down a new path. At the house I am assigned, on our unit day (shift), everybody takes a turn in the pan now. We even have a schedule to keep it fair. With twelve guys on the unit you only wind up cooking once a month (we work every third day) or less. Everybody has a specialty or two and a few guys like to experiment with new recipes. Makes for a good variety. Traveling drivers like coming here on the rotation because they know they won't have to cook again today! We like to think we give them a break and wouldn't let them cook if they wanted to. The mess costs each FF seven bucks a day, provides two meals. Any leftover goes in the "cush" and covers when the chef goes over budget. Usually have around ten to fifteen dolars in the "cush" at any given time.
Works really well for us.
By the way, if they are eating it, they like it. If they don't, they'll let you know..."Gee, I never had beef flavored bubblegum before."

Because about 65% of my dept. is Italian, pasta is huge, pork loins and steak are big too. Diverse menu, however gotta push extra harder
on the PT though:cool: .
