NYC vollunteers

I am curious, what is the situation with volunteer companies in New York city? Do they have a good relationship with FDNY? how do they know about calls? What is their function on the fireground?

There are currently 11 Volly Units in NYC. Their quarters receives the voice alarms from the FDNY Dispatchers as do the actual FDNY Companies. They have been used on occassion at Brush and Auto Fires, but are in no means allowed to operate at structuals or make interior attacks.;)
