Hey guys I am a paramedic student that is looking into jobs in the fire service or maybe a private ambulance co. Wondering how long have you been in this line of work, and are you feeling burnt out? IF so do you have other plans for another line of work?

We will eat smoke and pull out bodies as long as they continue to build them. Just once I would like them to ask one of us how to build it!!

Hi:

11 years fire service, 5 years full-time. No burnout here...yet.

You asked for my opinion, now you have it. Any similarity to another opinion, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

15 years fire (5 paid), 13 in EMS (3 as a medic). I believe you will find burnout to be higher among ambulance medics than fire, and higher in large metropolitan areas than rural / suburban areas. The greatest insurance against burnout is to love what you do. If you aren't happy, look for another job where you will be. I LOVE continuing education. I am working toward my RN. I plan to do that part-time and continue to work as a firefighter/paramedic.
