What does your service or dept. have as far as controlled substances on your units. At this time our BS protocols are only MS, Demerol, Valium, and Versed. I would like to see our dept start to use Fentanyl. Do you already use Fentanyl? If so, let me know what you think of its use.
Just checkin' to see what everyone else's more aggressive doc's are letting you carry.

We have been using Fentanyl now for about 2 years and have had some mixed reviews at first. We use it in two different settings.
1) Pain management, at first we were only giving 35-50 mcgs which is where the mixed reviews came into play, since then we had bumped the dose up to 50-100 mcgs based on MOI and wieght. We also use nitrus oxide along with it which seem to work really well. Morhine is still the drugs of chioce for our burn pts. Our service is very agressive with pain management and since the half life of fentanyl is very short there is no disapproval from the ER docs. I personally have never come across anyone who has had or developed an alergic reaction to it.
2) Fentanyl is used as a pre-seditive in our RSI protocol. It is given at 100 mcgs just after the lidocaine and seems to work well.
Hope that there is some usfull information somewhere in all this if you need more just email me.
