Ni-MH rechargable batteries

Has anyone ever heard of Ni-MH rechargeable batteries exploding? We had a walkie talkie with 4 AAA rechargeable batteries start a fire. Either the batteries caused a small explosion and blew off the battery cover and started a fire. Or the batteries shorted out when the battery back broke off and started a fire. Has anyone else had any experiences with this?

The first example that you gave is a known issue with Ni-Mh batteries. They can build up a flammable gas during charge or discharge and cause an explosion.
