Yes, neon fire happen quite often and are usually marked off aa a simple electrical fire. The truth is that with neon you are dealing with high voltage, which can be as high as 15,000 volts. This high voltage can short circuit for various reasons, and can travel a long distance searching for a ground. This ground can be a nail in a rafter, or simply the flashing on a soffit.
Most neon fires occur due to the fact that most neon installs are not inspected properly when installed, are they are quite frankly an accident waiting to happen.
