Tar Kettle explosion

We had an explosion inside a tar kettle used to heat roofing asphalt. We have seem fires in these units before but never an explosion. The unit had been warming for about 15 minutes prior to the incident. An exhaust burner was attached and operating properly according to the workers.

Has anyone had similar situations?

If memory serves me correctly, The City of Anaheim FD had a kettle explosion in the early 80's right in front of their Fire Station #6. Don't remember any of the details, but I do remember the station was covered with molten tar. Might check with them
