Just wondering if other explorer posts/jr. ff's are allowed to work with the spreaders, cutters, and rams. I've worked with them in Rescue I and II class, and some on special extrication classes, but so far not on a call. Also...what brand do you use? The dept with the jr's have AMKUS, and the Explorer Post has to call mutual aid for extrication equip.

whether they do or dont its illegal. its against OSHA child labor laws because if your under 18 you can operate hydraulic equipment. my dept doesnt let us use them for that reason...if god forbid something happens they would never live to see tomorrow

yeah, we cant use em on calls cuz of the rules, but we train with them allot, and i can honestly say i could do an auto extrication if the need arised. my dept uses hurst. another dept in my area uses amkus. i know how to use both, as i learned how to with both departments. they are both good tools, but the amkus are a world lighter in weight, and the power port having 2 tool hookups are great- not like the hurst where you have to use a splitter, and sacrifice the power when you use both simultaniously.

We allow our juniors to respond to motor vehilce accidents, but much like fire scenes they are more or less the gophers. Under NO circumstances are our juniors allowed to operate the extrication equipment. By allowing them to operate such equipment we would be opening ourselves up for a big problem. You will have plenty of oppurtunities to operate extrication equipment once you turn of age.
Again what NMFD33 has said, if you are under 18 in NJ you cannot operate power tools. We can help in setting up an accident scene, but can not operate. In Oradell, NJ, we work with Hurst Tools.

yeah, hurst are the original, but its not like im asking for a yellow truck here, im just saying that amkus is just as good, a lot lighter weight, and has a good power generator. we use hurst, and ill fight on their side, but i would have no regrets getting amkus tomorow.

In Pennsylvania, you have to be at least 18 years of age to be caertified in Basic Vehicle Rescue. The only time a junior firefighter would be able to use ANY rescue tools, would be on the drill grounds. That is it! The only people that are to use the tools at a rescue scene, are the ones that are BVR certified in Pennsylvania.

In my dept. We can train with them and if need be use them. We are switching from the crossive fluid of the hurst tools to the new non-crossive Phoenix tools.

In my Dept., Explorers are allowed to use extrication equipment only at supervised trainings. Explorers are not allowed to use any type of extrication equipment on-scene.

I dosen't matter if you are an Explorer you are risking your post because they are against Boy Scout Explorer Rules and they will shut a post down for stuff like that.

The Current Policy of the Boy Scouts Of America state that the use of explorers as techs on any call is strongly prohibited. Their main role is to observe to see what is going on. I know that the post that I am involved with do not allow the explorers to operate the equipment in real life situtations. But they are allowed to use the equipment in training situations where they are closely monitored by the Advisors
No where I cone from we're not allowed to operate them although are cadets are but the explorers are not, Hurst has the best tools those are the only ones MFD prefers to use in fact most departments prefer hurst tools over any leading competitior,.

The point of this posting is not what tool your department uses, rather if your explorers/cadets can operate them. Most states will under no circumstances allow anyone under 18 to be placed in harm's way. A rescue tool certainly can put one in harm's way. Explorers/cadets, your time will come. In the mean time, you still have a valuable place in the fire service.
