Hi Capt:

I am an advisor with Explorer Post 832 of the Swanton Fire Dept. The post was established around 1990 and was the first Explorer post established in the State of Vermont for the fire service.

We have had our ups and downs but for the past 3 years we have averaged about 10 members with considerable interest being shown in others wanting to join.

I'm a Junior firefighter from Center Ossipee, New Hampshire. This is my first year, but I am treated as though I were a regular fire fighter. I am allowed to do everything the other fire fighters do, as long as it doesn't break state laws. Most of the stuff we do is training, but I have been having a blast and learning a lot.

Hagerstown, Maryland. I have been a member of the Hagerstown Fire Department Explorer Post 321 for 2 years. I now hold the rank of Deputy Chief. We meet 2 or 3 times a month and do either classroom training or hands on with the fire department. Other activities we do for benefit of the community inclue directing traffic at carnivals and large events. Our post number comes from the fire alarm box number in front of Western Enterprise Co. 4 in Hagerstown. We hold our first nighter there for new recruits and that is where the number came from. By the way, the gamewell (fire alarm pull box) system is still in effect in Hagerstown.

I'm currently with Rosemount / Koch Refining Fire Explorers, in Minnesota. The post has been around for awhile, and has two focus's. (1). During the winter we go through book work, looking at tape and fire behavior, etc. (2). During the spring, summer, and fall we do drills and practice strong in select areas for compition. We have a strong post with a lot of suport from the fire fighters, and are always looking for new recruits to get out and help are community.

Thanks:
Future_in_EMS

P.S.
For you advisors and fire fighters, try to support your explorer post. Its hard to feel wanted and try to learn and get a good experince out of it when explorers are critized by departments. Thanks...

Great post idea Captain!

I've been a member with Coal Creek Township Fire & Rescue, Indiana for only a month now and I love it! I'm finishing up my last semester at Purdue. I know now exactly what I want to do in my life - help people. I was certified in CPR (health care provider level) today, and had a medical run in the afternoon! I start EMT Basic next Tuesday and I'm very anxious. I hope that I can someday in the future, be able to make saving lives a career. I respect everyone of you devoting yourselves to the emergency services - volunteer and paid. Good hearts, good minds, and good values...all of you guys and gals! Be safe and don't take any unecessary risks.

My name is Tim Dumas... I work as the Fire Chief and Venture Crew Advisor of Fire Venture Crew 1777 registered to Edward N. Cole Canoe Base in Alger Michigan, a Detroit Area Council Boy Scout Camp.

Our camp received a donation of a 1972 Ford Waterous Pumper which was donated by The City of St. Clair Shores (Michigan) Fire Department, and by Troop 273 in 1999.

The truck (Engine 5) is use for protecting Edward N. Cole Canoe Base which covers 1400 acres of mostly wooded property bordering the Rifle River. Engine 5 is used to protect the camp buildings, and for teaching the 1800+ Scouts and 800+ Leaders that attend our camp each summer about fire safety.

With the donation of Engine 5, we have started a Fire Venture Crew with 19 youth members, and 6 adults. We use the truck each week as a hands-on demonstration for the campers, and for training for the crew.

We have attend several different events since receiving Engine 5... The Annual Frankenmuth Fire Muster in Frankenmuth Michigan (1999, 2000), and the Michigan Fireman's Memorial in Roscommon (2000), as well as several local parades.

Our crew is currently working on putting together it's web site...

Spotswood is about 15 miles south of New Brunswick NJ, and about 30-35 miles from New York City. My dept is small, only 30 active guys plus 2 cadets -- not much motivation from my peers, they all seem to join the First Aid Squad... heh oh well. Anyway Spotswood is a small town of about 7,500 people in a 4 sq mile area.

We have 4 apparatus, 3 pumpers and 1 brush, E-72 (1992 Pierce Lance), Brush 73 (1988 Ford F-350 Custom), E-74 (2001 Pierce Quantum), and E-79 (1977 Hahn International).

Hello:

I am a Fire Explorer with the City of Riverside Fire Department, Explorer Post 101. Our post has been around since the 1970's here in sunny Riverside, CA.

We meet every Wednsday, at 5:45 p.m., sharp, at the Riverside Fire Department's Training Facility. Currently, the training facility is undergoing construction. We used to have 1 concrete 2-story family dwelling (with a basement), and a concrete high-rise tower of 4 stories. Our new facility is going to be over 3 acres, and will include new buildings in which we can train in.

As far as ride-outs are concerned, we can ride out at any of our 13 stations. Explorers may ride on a variety of apparatus, including: 3 Tiller Companies, 2 Telesquirts, 11 Engine companies, 3 squad companies, and 2 Brush Rigs. Explorers may participate in whatever the Captain allows, which would obviously be non-hazardous environments, (So, no interior firefighting operations.)

It takes new recruits 6 months of training to be eligable to be promoted to the Operations division, in which explorers may ride-out, participate in more complex activities, and the muster team. The recruits are also in charge of keeping our training facility clean, for department and post use.

We average 30-40 cadets a year.

We use to sit around, and watch videos, but now that we have a good chief, were allowed to do just about anything but enter a burning structure.

stay safe.

Dalton Fire Explorers
Sponsored by the Dalton Volunteer Fire Department

I have just become an advisor to the post, after being an explorer for 7 years. My father a Lieutenant brought the post back after it had been inactive for about 10 years. We have a core of 4 advisors, my father, two other firefighters and me, a probie.
We have meeting almost every Wednesday, with a business meeting about once a month.
We have done a lot of training from dressing hydrants, using SCBAs, using lifting bags, auto extrication tools, confined space rescue, ladders, brush fire, low angle ropes, fire extinguishers, sprinklers, thermal imaging camera, CPR, back boarding, and first-aid. One of my favorite is what we call an Open night, using what the explorers have learned we present a surprise scenario that they have to work through. Also, we try to encourage the explorers to come up with new activities.
Lately we have had problems trying to recruit new members. So if anyone reads this that lives near Dalton, Mass send me a message.

Here is our promo video, it was made and directed by the members.
