View Full Version : Junior / Explorer Duties Part II

As a junior member of my department, I feel that the comments made in other posts concerning the "duties" and necessity for having juniors responding are wrong. Often times juniors are needed for hitting the hydrant on the 1st due! Working fires jrs are needed for changing SCBA bottles, setting up lighting, and setting up ladders. For those who think that juniors are not valuble enough for response should reconsider.

OFD95, I AGREE 100% WITH YOU. JUNIORS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE FIRE SERVICE.

I believe jrs/explorers are a vitial part of a department. I don't think a junior/explorer should bump a more experienced firefighter off a call(which won't happen much!). I don't think they should feel the need to ride every call too.
Just my opinion.

I totally agree with OFD, and the mind set that Juniors and explorers are not important needs to STOP! We too are important assets to our fire departments and should not be treated like garbage, but nor should we be treated as kings, but as brothers who are helping people in need!

To be a s**t disturber of course.
Plants some C-4, Lines up a company of infantry, a Battery of Artillery and a Squadron of tanks.

100% agreement. Jr's are a very important asset to depts, however, i'm a firm believer that Jr's should give the truck seats to sr. ff's. I'm a Jr. in a dept where Jr's can't ride trucks, but put that aside. Jr's are just that: Junior Firefighters. We are valuable for responding, no doubt about it, but there are calls where Jr's shouldn't go.
Just my opinion, make your own decisions

Juniors are not necessary to any self sufficient department. I don't have any problem with them, but when you have to start relying on juniors to do the job, you have a staffing problem. Is that put simple enough for you?

Whoooo! Such hate and bashing of diffrent things....
Its all personol opoinion on what people think of JRs and how important or not important they are ....
All that really should matter to any JR or Explorer is what there fire Co. Thinks of them and What they expect out of them. Now im not saying A JR is going to make an interrior attack in a house fire. Or make an attack on a car fire with any sort of scba or any attack on a fire what so ever under the age of 18. But a lot of vital key rolls are offten played by exploers or Jrs in fire stations with low man power. For example A hydrant man. Beides bylaws and SOG's One of the very first things i was taught as a JR was how to set up a hydrant and get water flowing to the pumper/Engine. Now Im no experinced Rocket scientist nor fire fighter. But its a pretty darn important job if you have two guys in ur engine making an interrior attack, the driver preparing to pump. And they leave the JRs In charge of getting water to them....But when you first become a jr your first goal should be learning the rules of the fire houes. Paying attention to the basics, getting started on your eccentials, Learning the apparatus, etc....etc.... The fact people out there that start pointless arguments weather jrs are pointless or not is just stupid. Jrs and exploers are what they are. There to learn and to progress eventually in to a well experinced fire fighter. When i was jr i started off my first hand full of calls being the pump operators lap dog. Eventually working my way up to "before graduating to Seinor member" knowing what I could do and what I should do to assist the senior members on evreycall. as far as ladders, tools, Manning a hand line on entrapment calls for protection. It all comes in time!!! so all you jrs and exploers out there.!!!! Be Prepared to be a lap dog. A "go getter" and recive sum fire house jokes. But hang in there! Its all fun wile your learning! And dont forget you could be the part of the future of ur fire house! < My two cents!

We are called Explorers in Florida, I have been the post Captain for 3 years now, and in our county, we are sort of a taboo thing, other departments see us as future "Homegrown FF's" in the sense of, we have grown up learning the in's and out's of the department. We understand the policies and procedures and it gives the Chiefs and Captains a chance to observe the tendancies and character of the "kids" that will one day sit before them on a hiring board. Unfortunately for the hundreds of good Explorers there are some Explorers out there that give us a VERY bad reputation, and it makes it very hard for the FF's and Officers to accept us as part of the Department. It is the Explorers who have the Scanners and "ambulance chase," or the Explorers that don't show any sign of the very necessary comon sense that is required on the Fireground or around the Firehouse. I agree with the thread whole heartedly about the fact that we could be a very useful and productive asset for the department, but it will never happen if Explorers and Jr. FF's don't start Representing themselves as Explorers and as such, the qualities of a future FF.
In Pinellas, we have absolutely nothing to do with EMS, we leave that to the FF EMT-Paramedics, we can however set up IV's and Airways as long as we are supervised by a Paramedic and that we do not actually have any Patient Contact. as far as the one or two Fires and the 'round the clock vehicle collisions, again, we do what we are told by the Company Officer or DC.

The thread is still alive, and kinda twitching...
Juniors are very important. Without them, who would clean the bathroom!?
JK, so don't get your panties in a bunch. In all seriousness, I would say
Second that. Juniors are far from "vital", but they're definantly useful.
And about the bathroom comment. I've done my share of cleaning, and I wouldn't ask a junior to do anything I wouldn't do, just to clarify.

...uh...a junior taking a firefighter's place? That's like having a student teach a class in place of the teacher.:)
