Although Im no longer an explorer, (12 years as a senior ff with the last 5 1/2 on a career dept), I saw this category and started thinking back when I got started.
When I was an Explorer,I was issued an old canvas style coat, 3/4 boots, and a beat leather helmet. In act, that was what I had to use when I graduated into the ranks of the volunteers. It wasnt until 4 years later I finally got my 1st set of new gear!
My very 1st working fire I got to ride on the back step of the engine! Those days of riding the step and 3/4 boots are long gone, but what a way to begin my childhood dream!
Thank you for reminding me of my somewhat younger days(this job ages you fast!!)!!
Good luck in all you do!!!

I think it is just good that I have gear! I think that it can be hard to find an extra set of gear and i would like to thank my company taking the time to get it for us!

MY GEAR IS FAIRLY NEW. I HAVE A 1996 SET OF GEAR. IT IS TAN WITH YELLOW REFLECTORS, I HAVE BRAND NEW LEATHER BOOTS, AND A 1994 LEATHER NEW YORKER. EVEN THOUGH MY GEAR IS PRETTY NEW, THE REFLECTORS ARE TORN. OH WELL, ITS CHARACTER.

In our junior department we are given old black coats, old 3/4 boots, new gloves, and helmets without liners. That is what I was given when I joined three years ago. Over time I have earned a new helmet and a past ff gave me a pair of bunkers. The bunkers have a riped knee and groin area. When I took Intermediate Firefighter I had to borrow bunkers, and a coat to go inside the smoke house. Our department is getting new gear so hopefully we will be getting the old gear.

When I first Joined my Dept. as a Jr Member I was issued brand new PBI turn-out gear. It looked excatly like the full members, but my helmet was a nice Lime Green. It was that color so they would not send me in to a building fire. That helemt got me the nick name of "Gumby". I am now a full member an was issued a new Black Bullard NY Style helmet. Good Luck and Be Safe!!

Here in Orange County, California explorers are given full structure turnouts. This includes boots, pants, jackets, gloves, and helmet. They are yellow and the exact same thing as the career guys wear, except that our turnouts have the lettering EXP on them so we aren't confused for career firefighters. In addition to this we are also given brush turnouts with fire shelters.
All of our gear is used but it is in good condition and you get things that fit.

Our Gear is only 4 years old but that's because the senior officers got new gear this year and we got theirs. We have Morning Pride tan gear about 5 or 6 of us have Night Hawks.

Must say, my Dept. is pretty generous! We get 1 yr. old gear. See I live in Charlotte, NC, but vol. at a small rich town, so we get alot of money. We have the lagest ladder truck in the county, also the nicest/newest equip. As a VFF we also get voice pagers and Alpha pagers. I really enjoy if. If they don't have gear that fits you, then they will order you some. My gear is new, because my size is the most popular. It is tan, and has tons of pockets. We also get our First initial and last name on the back of our coat. Example : B. Duncan We also have access to any EMS turn-out gear, if we are running on squad. We are waiting for our wildland/brush fire turn-out gear to arrive, we got fitted for boots last meeting and our yellow gear should be here any day now!

Explorer gear is used, but is still in good condition. We would not issue gear to an explorer if it is not in decent condition. All explorers recieve a pair of bunker pants, coat, nomex hood, gloves, bots, and helmet. Explorers are also issued the old Minitor I pagers.

Our Juniors get hand-me-downs. It is black bunker gear that is the same as the seniors. We have red helments and seniors have black helments. I have a brand new pair of bunker pants because they were too small for anyone else.

Up here, explorer's/cadet's get hand me downs, unless there is none your size, they they try and find it or order it. I am actually selling my personal set of gear right now, as it doesn't fit me. Check out the posting about it

Our dept. gives us the same gear the seniors have, except for we have blue helmets and they have black. Only downside to this is if a senior needs gear we have to give ours up. Also, we dont have voice pagers (seniors are still issued plectrons) but we can get alpha pagers.

We get the hand me down nomex gear, but I bought my own used Janesville PBI gear and a new helmet. We're on a very limited budget, so were thankful for the hand me downs.

If your an explorer and your department is giving you new or fairly new gear your department has its priorities screwed up. You dont need good gear because you shouldnt ever be in a position to need it. New and newer gear should only go to real firefighters.
My opinion alone

When i first joined my department they gave me the same turnout gear the rest of the members of the company has. The only difference was the color of the helmets. The juniors get black helmets the seniors get yellow helmets and the officers get red helmets.
