In your department how old do you need to be to be a "Junior Member" or "Explorer" and how old to be a real member?

We use the BSA standard of 14 years old to be a cadet. By connecticut state law to be a fire fighter you must be at least 18.

-- no juniors
-- regular membership begins at 16, but with restrictions (like no SCBA, IDLH atmosphere, power tools) until age 18.
-- Drivers have to be 21

Capez,
CT Commission on Fire Prevention & Control won't teach classes to those under 18 if it involves activities OSHA would not allow them to do at that age -- i.e. entering dangerous atmospheres or operating power tools.

However, being 16 is perfectly legal for exterior firefighting. Your department policy may very well be that you don't engage in actual fire duties until 18 though.

In my dept in CT, you have to be 16 to be a jr, or 15 in your father is a member. My town runs its own FF1 class and you have to be 18 by the time you take the test, which means 17 year olds can take it as long as their birthday is before the end of the class.

Here, in WV, it's 16 to be a Junior and 18 to be a full member. I don't think we have too many, if any, fire explorers in WV. If we do, they're not close to where I am... Not sure about rules or laws concerning driving apparatus, but we have a 19 y/o member who is always doing driver training, so it must be 18.

You must be 14 to join join our Junior program. Then when you turn 16 the Dept. will vote you in, but you are on 2 year limited duty. Then you can actually do stuff. But pretty much, you are a junior until 18.

You need to be 15-17 to be an explorer in our town. We could of made it 14 but we felt that the 14 year olds in my town that wanted to join the FD werent mature enough to join..so we raised the age level to 15 when we made our new by-laws..
