Hello all!

I currently run a Fire Explorer Post, though the Boy Scouts, which now falls under the Learning for Life program of the BSA.

I am considering breaking off from the LFL/BSA programs and establishing a seperate organization. The biggest issue to solve will be insurance, both liability and medical.

I have contacted the VFIS. While they did not say no, they apparantly were not especially interested in providing such coverage.

What I would like to find out is what other non-BSA such program use. If you operate a Junior Firefighter/Fire Cadet/etc type program, and it is not a part of the BSA, please let me know how you guys handle liability and accident/medical insurance.

Thanks!

I think if you are going to split from the BSA your best course of action is to make a strong affiliation with your department. Find out if your fire department will foot the insurance bill by directly affilliating the cadet program with them and use the fire department insurance to cover the cadets. I know my department gives the cadet program tax monies evry year so your department might be able to strike a deal with the insurance carrier to provide for the cadets.

My department has municipal insurance and we are 100% covered for insurance (liability, injury, death, etc...). Any other info needed, e-mail me at Brendan@fireman.net

I am moderator of a Jr. firefighter program in a small volunteer department. Are JR's are covered under the fire company's policy. As said in one of the other replies, if you are not affiliated with a department, it would be a good idea to do so. Many departments would be glad to take on such a program to furnish a supply of young FF's. Also, in a department the Jr's may be able to recieve more experience. Good Luck!

Thanks to all who have responded to my insurance questions. I plan to stay with the new Learning for Life program of the BSA for now. But, next year I may make the change.

Our Explorer Post is sponsored by our volunteer fire association, which works in conjunction with the rest of the department (we're a combination department). So, the city provides insurance coverage for all of us in the department, and I suspect that maybe we can get the Explorers added to it too.

Thanks again everyone!
Ed
