I am interested about your experiences and views in this type of training facility.
If you have experienced simulated 'flashovers' in a swede container or if you are an instructor - what angles of spray pattern do you use (cone angles)? and why??
Carbonaceous or gas fuelled? What are you opening & entry procedures? How do you operate in the container - crawling?...or sitting?...or one knee down? Protective clothing?...what are your experiences?

Hi we were fortunate enough to use a container operated by a company in Dahlonega Ga. The fuel used was pallets and particle boards. there were benches in the observation area and we sat along them facing the fire chamber. The entry and exit was a rear door.
Full NFPA compliant gear is mandated. The pattern used was a 30degree fog pattern in short burst. however we also used straight streams to see the difference. The straight stream has it's place but not ALL the time. In my 19 years in a metropolitan FD we have used both. We use the saying left for life right to rock n roll. My standard practice is to stop at a doorway use straight at window level and when you hear glass break use a 30 degree fog IT WORKS! If you don't hear glass break relax a second we have a very agressive truck crew.

Thanks for your response GP - I find it really interesting that you were taught a 30 degree cone angle. I would be interested in nozzle type and flows as well.

It is my experience that the 30 degree cone is too narrow for this type of water-fog application. You will get some effect with it but the 40-60 degree cone range is more suited to gas-phase cooling whilst using short rapid bursts from the nozzle. It might sound petty but the cone-angle is vital in gaining maximum benefits!

I am glad your experiences in the container system were worthwhile and hope many more firefighters get the opportunity in the near future.
