I am a 2nd gen. fireman, who else has the "fire engine red blood" in there vains and do you plan on keeping the tradition alive? My Dad ( the world's best F/F...yes I'm partial) retired a Chief and I'm currently a Lt going on 14yrs line service. I started as a vollie and got my state cert and have since been a career F/F for several yrs.. If i have a boy I hope it impresses him enough to carry it on. T.C./B.S. brothers & sisters

I'm 3rd generation firefighter. My dad is still active as a volunteer officer and my grandfather was a volunteer as well. I spent 11 yrs in the vol. dept. before my appt. several years ago to a paid dept. Hopefully my son or daughter will keep up the tradition.

My family came to the US from the Netherlands in 1856. My 23 year old son is a seventh generation firefighter, and he has great-great-grandpa's 1896 bed keys and Chief's speaking trumpet.

I'm a third generation in a row. I vollied for almost eight years before becoming career. My Dad, also a preacher, has been on four departments across the country. He is currently a safety officer in NW PA. My Grandpa is a retired Lt. from NY.
A few generations before that, my 4-Greats grandfather, Archibald Tanner, was a businessman in Warren, PA. He wanted fire insurance on his business. His agent wouldn't sell him any, as Warren had no fire department at that time. As the family lore goes, it was a week later, after a trip to nearby Elmira, NY, and a stop at American La France, he came back with a hand powered pumper, some buckets, hoses, & a nozzle, and organized some volunteers. He then contacted his insurance agent again and informed him that Warren now had a volunteer fire department, and he walked out with fire insurance!
By the way, that hand pumper is now on display at the <a href="http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Museum/7606/">Erie, PA, Fire Museum</a>. Erie has a real nice museum, in their old No. 4 Fire Station. There's a working Gamewell set up in there, some other antique apparatus, and is PACKED with memorabilia. It's worth a visit!

I did it backwards, Dad joined my first department after me !
He has since retired.
I have 1 son and 2 daughters, all of whom love the firehouse, so I see the tradition continuing (much to the chagrin of the wife http://www.firehouse.com/interactive/boards/smile.gif

Hey! I found a pic of the hand pumper that my 4-Greats grandfather bought!
http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Museum/7606/picture9.gif
This picture is off the <a href="http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Museum/7606">Erie Fire Museum</a>'s page. It is in there "Memorial Room" in the back of the apparatus floor.
I have another one somewhere, taken in July '98 of my Dad and I standing at this same pumper. I think my kids are in it too, can't recall off hand. When I find it I'll post it, too!

Dad retired as a captain and went to work for city building inspection dept. and helped get better compliance with the fire safety components of the code. I took his place 18 years ago and am now a captain. My daughter is not interested in the fire service and this pleases me. Capt. Dan

that's pretty cool Ken. I've been obtaining collectables and antiques for years. My goal when I retire (which I hope is WAY down the line)is to open a bar & grill that is exclusive to the public safety arena. Thanks for sharing the pic, I love to see the other one if you find it. Take care brother.

I am at least a 3rd generation firefighter! I have been a voluteer on and off since 1977 and am also a creer industrial FF with the Kodak Fire Dept. My father, now retired, was a volunteer for 45+ years as well as a firefighter in Korea. My mother was one of the first women in the county to go through the Essentials of Firemanship class in the late 50's. I remember her driving the old open cab pumper. I have a picture of my mother's father with the Tunkhannock, Pa. fire departments new 1927 pumper. I have a picture of my father's father in dress uniform with the Owego Fire Dept, Owego, NY probably from the early to mid 1920's. I also tell everyone that my blood is fire engine red. I have a daughter (14) and a son (13). The daughter wants to be a teacher and the son doesn't know what he wants yet. Time will tell! Stay safe and enjoy!
P.S. Great topic!!

I am 3rd generation and so is my wife it might even go further back than that on both sides if we would dig deeper. I have two daughters one is 6 and the other is 3 they both enjoy going to the firehouse so hears hoping there willbe a 4th generation in my family.
my mother, sister, grandmother, and several cousins are invovled and most of us are line officers from Captian and above. I am the only one that is paid of anytype. I work for a volly house as a firefighter/emt during the day and in the past my wife has worked as an emt for a volly house during the day.
For the families in the service lets keep it going because it is the only way vollies will keep going and without families the career will fall of too.
stay safe.

Second generation here, my dad became a volly after getting out of the Navy after WW2. I became a volly at age 14 in 1965 and went career in 1987. I have a ex- brother-en-law that was a volly following his fathers foot steps and his son is a volly firefighter and career EMT. I have two daughters but so far they haven't shown any interest in the fire service.
Sorry, almost forgot my other brother-en-law, he's a career Lt. with the same dept. I work for. He's a officer on a squirt wagon if that counts? LOL!

After he went to Vietnam he took about 15 years off before joining up with c'ville. He has held every fire line office in his 18 years with the department. I started in 1990 when I was 13 with the junior firefighters program. I am now 24 and have been a Fire Captain since 1997. I love being a Volunteer.

I'm a second generation firefighter, just chose a little different path than my dad. He fought forest fires for the US Forest Service in Washington State for a number of years, not my cup of tea.(sorry dad!) He was also a volunteer in the town we lived in, so I'm guessing that's how the structural bug bit me.

Well I guess you could say that I'm a second generation ff. due to a cousin and an uncle. My brother-in-law is a true third generation. His grandfather was a chief and then his father was a ff at the dept I work for. This is my wifes brother and family. My sisters husband is a second generation as his uncle is a Lt. at our dept. (my sisters husband a I work for the same dept. on the same shift as does his uncle who is my Lt.) We also have two other family members that are other generation ffs. My wifes uncle and his son with whom I work with along with the above others. I hope that my son or daughter will want to follow in my footsteps cause they both love seeing "daddy" at the firehouse and always enjoy "daddy's fire trucks" Stay safe Jeff

I'm a 3rd generation in a way. My great uncle had passed the bug on to my father. However, my father "retired" when he was young. That was before I was even thought of. I joined a vol. department on my own and will never regret it. And an intresting side note I have 2 cousins (my fahters blood nephew's) who are also fire fighters. It has to be in the blood or something.

I am a second generation firefighter. My dad was a volunteer for about 15 years, since then he had retired from answering the calls. I am in my 8th going into my 9th year as a volunteer. He was a captain in the department and so am I now, my 3rd year. I was always interested in the field, everytime his pager would go off I had always raced him to the door hoping he would take me to the firehouse to watch them leave and prayed i could go to. As I was getting involved with fire service he was leaving it. When i joined a new company I am in now, I tried getting him back into it, it didn't work. Currently Im trying to make this my career that I've always dreamed of. It is very interesting to read these about everyone coming into this profession.

I am a second generation firefighter. My dad is still a career ladderman in Logansport, IN. Fire Dept, (32 years)and I volunteer with North Star VFD, AK. the military brought me up here. This is my second dept, I was a volunteer with Gore Hill VFD just outsde Great Falls, MT. for over 5 years. My wife's dad was a career ff in Huntington Beach, CA area back in the 60's, stories about running in LA during the Watts Riots almost unreal. He got out of that and went on to ministering for the Salvation Army where he volunteered in Coos Bay/North Bend OR for a while when they lived there. We don't have any children yet, but I would hope to continue a tradition, however if it doesn't workout o'well.

I am a second generation Volunteer. My Dad is an Asst. Chief and is in charge or our Station 1 (of 3 in our department). He has served for 23 years and is still going strong. I joined three years ago after completing my obligations to the USAF (where I served as a security police officer. I changed sides and am now a Lt, also assigned to our department's Station 1. It is a great honor to serve with and learn from one of the best, my father.
My younger brother, a fire inspector with the city fire department got his start 10 years ago as a vollie at our station 1. He moved to the carear department and fought fires for 8 years before moving to the inspectors' division a year ago.
My Stepfathers' dad was also a carear fire fighther retiring from the city department as a Captain.

I am a 2nd generation in a small volunteer department. Though my grandfather was not a member, most of my great uncle's were, which got my father interested. He joined when we was fourteen as a junior. He worked is way up and became a Deputy Chief before he decided to go back to just being a member and spending time with his family. At age fourteen I followed in his footsteps and also joined at age 14, and now have been a member for 10 years. I am glad he got me into it, and we still go to meetings and sometimes calls together. It is great!
My Dad has been in the fire service for about 20 years now, I joined at age 17 and have been in almost 9 years, my sister was in for 5 years and is now a nurse and a paramedic --- the three of us were at incident scenes together over a four year period. I've been on a line with both my Dad and my sister. I'm currently trying to become a career f/f.

Also we still carry one of those 15 minute MSA shoulder slung SCBAs. Stays in the plastic green box still. It's for extreme backup emergency when all else fails and nothing else will work including holding your breath and praying.

My father was a wildland firefighter 25 or 30 years ago with the Ecology Corps, back in the day when they didn't have shake 'n' bakes. He has a couple stories to tell about it.<br /> My aunt was a paramedic in Oakland and is currently a fire marshall in Eugene. she has quite a few stories to tell. <br /> Mom was a vollie back home before we moved to Chi-Town. it's in the blood. <br /> I've been trying to talk my brother Tom in to joining, 'cause he would be good at it, but he wants to be an accountant.<br /> I've also got a brother who is going into police academy, but I don't talk to him for obvious reasons. <img src="frown.gif" border="0">

My grandfather passed away in 1973 and my father retired in 1989. I have another 17 years to go until I can kick back! <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

My Grandfather, Father(since retired),myself and my brother all work or worked for the same dept. North Central Fire Dist. Sadly though my brother Kirk was killed in a freak accident while on duty this past July.I am defintly going to continue the tradition and I will do my best to see to it that Kirk's son Kaleb and my daughter will join someday.
2nd generation. Dad's in 45 years, I'm in 23. Both were Chief of Departments at the same time in neighboring companies. I was never more proud then when we worked together on a job, side by side. I think he was pretty proud, too.

My great-great grandfather was a chief in a Westchester County NY fire department. My uncle was a FDNY captain. I have 4 cousins in FDNY. Don't know what generation, if any, that makes me. I hope that someday if I have kids one of them will want to volunteer or go the career route. Volunteering has provided a great deal of enjoyment for me. But I will not force it on them <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">

Kinda scary, two of my family on the same dept. <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> Anyway, my mom is also a firefighter/emt, my little brother was a volunteer for a little while, my wife is a paramedic, and now the youngest of my twin daughters tells me "she wants to be a fireman" too(the other twin wants to be a firedog <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> - I dunno?). Second Generation here. My dad was a paid-on-call firefighter in Illinois and my experience started with him at age 21.
I remember riding "tailboard" with dad, back when tailboard riding was still legal. Dad called his turnout coat a "slicker". It looked like a slicker. It looked like rubberized canvas with the buckle/clasps down the front. He wore three-quarter boots. Bunker pants weren't around then.
I made my first fatal house fire with my dad. I remember having a talk about that fatal fire with my dad at our kitchen table that night. He poured me a shot of whiskey and I think that is the first time I ever drank with my dad.
My dad turns 70 this month and still loves the fire service. Firefighter/paramedics from Dallas saved his life from a heart attack Labor Day Weekend of this year. He wants me to take him to their station to bring them some ice cream, and say thanks.
I have two uncles that were in the fire service and three uncles that were police officers. Public Service has been a family tradition. I am proud to be a part of the fire service.

Third generation here. My grandfather was a career Lt. on a small dept. My father was hired on and moved through the ranks quickly to Asst.Chief of the Dept. My father then moved to a chiefs job at another career dept. In the meantime, my grandfather retired at the rank of Lt. I worked career at the dept. where my dad was chief for 5yrs. before relocating to my current dept. where i am a driver/operator. My dad has since retired with 30yrs. service and I am in my 13th year as a career firefighter/paramedic. My son loves the fire service, but I don't really know if it will be a career choice for him.

2nd generation here, 1st generation paid. My grandfather was a vollie way back when and then became the Co Sherriff. I didn't know that he was a firefighter until after I started. I'm not sure that I want my son to follow me or not, even though his first ride on an engine was when he was 2 months old. I kind of hope he goes into engineering and then he can help prevent fires on that side.

My Father and I are currently serving in the same department right now. He was a Assistant chief for about 5 years, and is now safty officer. I've been doing this since 18 (I'm 22 now). My brother did it before getting married and moving away. I also have two uncles who are also in this department as well, with my one uncle who served as cheif. And my aunt was a driver during the day for the trucks and ambulance.
In my department we do have several familes serving together. It is really neat with Fathers/sons (sorry not Father/daughter or mother/daughter....yet..Do have a Mother/Son <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> ).

Paternal Grandfather was Chief of the Manasquan Engine Co 2 for many years. Was either Chief or member when Moro Castle (I think this was the ocean liner) came aground at Asbury Park N.J., and responded with my Dad and my uncle. My father joined the Navy during the war and just didn't return to the fire house.
After he got his degree in mechanical engineering he moved to Philadelphia area and when I was old enough I joined the local volunteer department in 1975. Shortly after I joined my older brother and when he became old enough my younger brother joined. My younger brother is still a volunteer in a Bucks County Company.
I am now a career fire marshal for a Township just outside Philadelphia. Have spent my entire adult life as a volunteer and career fire service member in PA and MD, and I hope that my two daughters do what ever makes them happy. If that is the fire service then that's okay with me.

I have been a volunteer for 17 years now, I started my career late in life. However what has made me most proud is that both of my sons have decided to join the same company as myself. I never really tried to influence them to join, but it appears somehow or another it just wore off on them. Joys in life come in many different ways, but none is greater than sharing this experience with them. At the age of 50, and still being active, I am looking forward to what the future has to hold for all three of us. To all be well, and be safe. <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

My dad started as a volunteer 33 yrs ago. The dept eventually became paid-on-call. I am the stereotypical firehouse rat. I started with the dept. in 1994. Coincedentally, after many years working in operations at 2 chemical plants, my dad transferred into the Safety & Loss Prevention Dept.(insustrial fire & ems) of his current employer. I was hired into his dept. there in 1997. He is now my shift captain at work, but I'm the Lt. at home. I have 3 small boys who love to hang out at the firehouse. Could history repeat itself? I can only hope. Thanks for letting me share.

My grandfather and father have now since retired from the fire service, my uncle however is still going strong. He is a state insturctor, and a carrer firefighter, I hope to follow in his footsteps and keep the tradition alive.

Hi Everybody,
I hope I can get in here even though I am not a FF yet. I still have 1.5 to 2 years of college left. My Dad was a vollie for 13.5 years. First with the city I grew up in and then the county. My plans are to go into the fire service after school. That is all I ever wanted to be. My Dad and I haven't discussed my plan yet but I think he knows. There is always one thing we can talk about and that is firefighting. It is a very good thing. I'm trying to learn as much from you guys and girls (and my Dad) about the job as I can. Thanks for letting me butt in here and making me feel welcome to the forums in the past year.

I am a 3rd Gen firefighter. My Grandfather was a cop and a volunteer firefighter. My father was a firefighter for 36 yrs and Chief of the dept for 17 yrs until he was killed in a car accident in 1996. I am in my 3rd year as a member of the same small town fire dept.
We are a small rural community with 32 volunteers. Some of you probabally answer more calls in a day, then we do in a year. In fact we probabally spend more time drinking beer then fighting fires. But this doesn't take away the pride and how serious my Dad took his job as Chief. I have just been elected Sec/Treas of the dept, and will continue to make this dept the best it can be.
Growing up washing trucks, hanging around the fire station, and getting up with your Dad for that 3:00 am call never leaves you.
Thanks for the great posts. Stay safe.

Wow, what a blast from the past....
Anyway, I am the second generation. My father was part of the original crew that started the Township Fire Department back in 1955. The surrounding townships around the city formed their own because when the city came out, they came with 500 gallons of water and 4 guys.
They started with one truck kept at one of the guys garage until they actually got a "station" at the town shop building. Now it has grown to include 5 townships, 5 stations each with an engine, tanker, brush truck and rescue, as well as some specialized rescue equipment. I have his badges and a department patch from back then and have them in a display case, looks pretty cool.

Third generation firefighter here. I've been a vollie for a little over 2 years (and a dispatcher for 1). Dad was a career firefighter/paramedic for 30 years. He was one of the first members of the local EMS department before they and the FD combined. Grandpa was a vollie for a number of years, as was my great-uncle. Great-uncle eventually became Chief of his department.
If I can be half as good of a firefighter as those three, whoever I end up working for will be good shape. :D
