Imagine, that. Punishment for a crime. What a novel concept.

Sex abuser jailed by Texas judge for 4,060 years
Parole possible in 3209 after teens were subjected to 'shocking' assaults

updated 5:01 a.m. ET, Thurs., July. 3, 2008
WEATHERFORD, Texas - A man was sentenced to more than 4,000 years in prison Wednesday for sexually assaulting three teenage girls.

A day after finding James Kevin Pope guilty, jurors sentenced him to 40 life prison terms — one for each sex assault conviction — and 20 years for each of the three sexual performance of a child convictions.

At the request of prosecutors, state District Judge Graham Quisenberry ordered Pope to serve the sentences consecutively, adding up to 4,060 years. He will be eligible for parole in the year 3209, according to the Parker County District Attorney's Office.

"We believe it was a just result," prosecutor Robert DuBoise said, adding that he was "overwhelmed" with the judge's decision to stack the sentences.

Pope, 43, abused the girls for nearly two years. It came to authorities' attention earlier this year after Pope made several inappropriate comments to a friend, who notified Child Protective Services.

During the trial, the teens testified about the abuse, and their sexually explicit photographs were shown as evidence.

'Traumatic'
But Rick Alley, Pope's defense lawyer, told jurors in closing arguments that the victims were incapable of understanding what happened, the Weatherford Democrat reported in its Wednesday online edition.

"If it was as traumatic as they indicate, they would be able to give you (specific dates and times of the incidents). Simply because it's shocking doesn't make it true," Alley said.

During the sentencing phase of the trial, a U.S. Secret Service agent testified that while examining Pope's home computer, he found more than 200 images of child porn.

Later Wednesday, some jurors said the case was difficult because of the subject matter.

"We were careful not to make any mistakes in viewing and evaluating the evidence," said juror Dale Lewis.

The defense attorney sounds like a piece of work, too.

Don't be surprised if this sentence gets overturned. The defense will make an argument that this was not 40 seperate acts but one continuous act. The appeals court will probably buy it. Hope not, but stranger things have happened.

My punishment is better. Give me 10 minutes in a room alone with him and a baseball bat.

Put him down range about 50 yards! The only good thing is that it sounded as if the children were too young to know what was going on. Too bad the Court didnt feel it just to rule that death penalty was acceptable for heinous crimes like this.

So tell me....

for sexually assaulting three teenage girlsp/quote]

[qote]Pope's defense lawyer, told jurors in closing arguments that the victims were incapable of understanding what happened

If the girls are teenagers, how are they "not old enough to understand"?

"If it was as traumatic as they indicate, they would be able to give you (specific dates and times of the incidents). Simply because it's shocking doesn't make it true," Alley said

Who in his/her right mind would keep a logbook/diary of such events? Why should it be a requirement to give such, much less remember it? Refer to previous thread regarding death penalty, and some dumbass laywer saying he would "tear the child apart". GGGRRRRRRR Decapitation, starting with the big toe, right foot is too good for this one.

Maybe they could ship him to the Bayou. Don' t those big critters that lurk in the swamp need to be fed? I hear they will eat everything, even the bones.

NAAAAH, give any of the parents any weapon they want and lock him in a room hung from the ceiling, or even better bury him alive (in a bayou!)

BTW, parole in 3209! that's outrageous! he should be sentenced for far longer!!

You people are too easy.
Stake the guy down naked over a fire ant mound, then give the parents a gallon of honey, a can of gasoline, some matches, and a weed eater.

We'll take the kids in the firetruck to see a movie and get some ice cream.

4,060 years

Ok. I don't usually chime in but this just gets me every time.
4,060 years. Uhhh Hmmm. Yup. Forget the amount of years and just administer the punishment. As long as he can't apply for parole or be pardoned or anything foolish like that...

I can't say that I agree with locking him up for x amount of years; I am more of a "put him out of our misery kind of mindset.

Yup; I'll stand here and say it. I believe in Capital Punishment.

If he absolutely has to be incarcerated, forget the isolation for his protection. Those girls had no one to protect them from him, so why does he need it? If we are going to house known murders, we may as well utilize their talents occasionally.

I find it hard to believe that the girls wouldn't know what was happening to them. They may not, depending on their age and upbringing know the specific name for what was happening; but I am fairly certain they knew and felt that something wasn't right.

I'll stop before I get going on a rant.

Good creative ways you guys are coming up to punish him. Myself, I'll stick with the punishment they gave him. Sure, he will be put in segregation, but there has to be times when other inmates have a chance to get at him and do some frightening things to him. He has to fear for his a** for the rest of his life, both figuratively and literally.

As for the death penalty I'm in the mindset that sometimes that lets people off a little too easy.

I hope the Texas judge can give the Vermont legal system a few pointers on how to handle these type animals. A 12 year old was kidnapped and found dead in central Vermont. The "suspect" is her uncle, who has a history and was "a model inmate etc...etc.    Too many tree hugging liberals have moved in that worry about the animals instead of the victims. In this case a 12 year old... no punishment would be too bad for the "convicted person(s)" of this crime.

ChiefDog,
Your judges in that little state of yours must be taking lessons from the political hacks that are in my liitle state.

The word "justice" means different things in different states; and the "liberal" leaning, holier than though, bleedign heart types think that everyone can be reformed.

If someone harms my children (if I have them) or one of my nieces or nephews........

ChiefDog, I've been following the story from Vt, and well I dont really know what to say, except that "Good, they got him."

However, I am still a bit puzzled as to how (as I understand it, he was already "tagged" as a child molester?) got into contact with her in the first place.

He was her Uncle, I believe her Mother's brother. Her father was out of state (divorce) and step-father was not fully aware of the background of the Uncle.

From what I have heard so far in the media, he was charged in mid-80's with molesting another 15 year old relative but the charges were dropped. He was convicted of kidnap and rape of a separate 18 yr old in the Rutland area. He went to jail and got out on good behavior because he took the sex abuse class, then got off probation early for good behavior. :(

All against the Prosecutor's better judgement and objections, but probation has too many people to watch and not enough Officers.... VT liberal's think we can rehab everyone and NIMBY's who think Dean was a good Governor.

He would have been under probation until 2013 from the rape of the 18 year old but he got off for his model rehab and behavior!!!!! Now he is accused of at 42 kidnapping his 12 yr old niece and the rape / murder is yet to be proven.... This guy should be taken out of the gene pool. The Fed's want to do that an are the ones pressing for the Death Penalty for him. Only the second or third time in the last 50 years or so in Vermont.

The FBI sent in a team like the Criminal Minds show within a day or so and they did some computer CSI stuff.... leading to the Uncle and others who assisted after the fact.

We are still one of the safer states per capita but the craziness is coming. Vermont is tolerant. Which I can go with to a point. When things like this happen we have too many "flat landers" that have moved in. "Flat Lander in Vt is someone who moves from another state to VT because it is so beautiful, etc etc.... then wants to change it to be just like where they came from. Freaks and all. We have, as does other areas, enough freaks of our own we do not need to import them.

I agree 100%!!! I honestly can not say what I would do if someone did something to my Son. If he was the victim of something like this I probably would be in jail soon after taking out the person(s) who did it.

When the Criminals beat the Police Officer that took them to jail back home you have to wonder.... The drug problems are getting bad. Gangbangers from Albany NY or Springfield MA are coming to VT. Last year one who was involved in a shooting in Rutland called Mommy to come get him in VT after being involved in a shooting.... WTF???? But they are going to rob or threaten the wrong person eventually. Many people have guns in VT! Including me, I have a few.:) Most people who do have them in Vermont do know how to take aim and hit the target. We have many deer hunters and waterfowl hunters who take firearms seriously. They will threaten or attack the wrong place and they will be dead. It is only a matter of time...

The legal system is out of control. The State is going after a Bar up here that served a guy who then went out on DUI #5 and killed a young college kid from my town. He went the wrong way on I89 and tagged the car the kid was riding in. I don't know if the bar was or was not liable for serving the DUI#5 guy..., but what about the judge that let him out on the street with DUI 2,3 and 4!!! Don't they have some liability?

We are going to hell in a handbasket.....

Here, here!! We should make the system work for US. We should all fight for capital punishment for scumbags like this.

The capital punishment debate is virtually over. The courts have taken all the options away. It is only a matter of time before it is outlawed completely, even in TX and FL, by the federal courts.

Oh yeah, if your name is Horn, you are still permitted to dole out capital punishment at will.

"You want to make a bet?" Horn answered. "I'm going to kill them."

PS: TX people, I thought your CJ system is so weak that is the reason you need heroes such as Horn?
