This idea was brought to my attention by a paramedic friend of mine.

He said he would like get his RN after he gets hired on as a FF/Paramedic and then work as an RN on his off days. Anybody else do this?

I live in Texas. Are there any programs for medics to become RN's in a short period of time?

Don't know about TX, but here in Michigan it's getting popular. We have 5-6 FF/medics in my dept who work in ERs as their side job, almost all of them are going to RN classes so they can double their pay at the side job.

redbeard,

was your old screen name xstalkrx, cause you type the same type of questions, sentence structure is similar and the stories are all the same?

plus you came around right after we ran xstalkrx off.

Ryan TX, you don't have PM set up.

but still glad to know that others recognize the similarities between xstalkrx and redbeard.

Actually I know someone who did just the opposite.

I used to work with a guy who was a full time nurse and working as a relief lieutenant on a combination department on his days off. That was a few years ago but I'm sure he is still doing it. He would work 2-3 12 hour shifts a week at the hospital and do 2-3 24 hour shifts at the FD.

Just go to nursing school and leave the fire service alone.

Now THAT'S funny!

DCFD- It's the fire department in a very small pueblo known as your Nation's Capital...

If I can cross train to be a nurse I wonder if I can cross to be a gynecologist? Come on now lets be serious in our post's.

My nomination for post of the year:

Which department is DCFD?

We have a couple of guys at work that had their RN before getting hired, and several that have gotten it since they've worked there. Futhermore, we have at least a dozen that work as EMT-P's in the ER, something that's very popular in this area.

GREAT way to make some extra money if you have the time and discipline to make it though three years of intense school....

You can actually get your RN in 2 years part time if you have the pre-requisites done (2 years full time if you need the pre-req's). Some county colleges have an associate degree RN program. It is a difficult course of study, but if you are already a paramedic, you should fly through.

Even if you are a basic EMT, it is a small leg up in the class.

I worked as an RN before I got into management. Per Diem RN's in NJ can make between 35 and 50 bucks an hour. More on weekends.

This would be a great side job...

Xstalkrx back from the dead? It's almost too good to be true! What's with the name change? Oh... now I remember! If anyone wants to know the details, PM me.

LOL!!! I'm glad you cleared that up for him, since it appears to be one of his most important factors in choosing his career path.
