I was wondering if anyone could let me know or assist me in finding out information about the LVFD. I am currently a volunteer in NJ and am seriously thinking of transferring to a career department in Las Vegas. Any information would be appreciated from if they are hiring to what the actual requirements are to become a LV firefighter to if NJ cert's are transferable to LV. I've looked around on the Net, but I haven't come up with anything that I actually need.

Any information besides telling me to contact the Las Vegas Division of Fire Safety would be greatly appreciated.

-Las Vegas City- ISO Class 1 and just hired recently. They want FF/Paramedics.

-North Las Vegas- They just hired LATERAL and non-lateral FFs. They like medics too.

-Henderson- The just hired. Finally changed their written test from the CWH format. They like Paramedics.

-Clark County Fire- ISO 1 department. They just established a list. Half are medics, half non-medics.

-Boulder City Fire- Likes to hire Paramedics, but hasnt tested in awhile. A one station department. Dont know whats next for them.

-State of Nevada/NDF- One station in the mountains of Las Vegas. Yes, Las Vegas has mountains and snow. Hasnt tested in awhile. Non-medic, but EMT-I.

-Federal Fire- Become a GS-081 Federal Firefighter and work at the Air Force base there. Slow, but youre there working.

As you can see, the Vegas Valley wants Paramedics. ALS EMS is their bread and butter. Have any certs from NJ wont help much. I would suggest moving there and getting established first in a non-fire job. AMR ambulance is always hiring for EMTs and may even send you to Paramedic school locally and pay for it.

Best bet is to look at AMR or Southwest Ambulance service. And remember, its HOT there too.

Thanks for the advice and information. Don't worry, I just got back from an 8-day Vegas vacation Saturday so I know of the heat plus it's hotter in Jersey right now with the humidity. If I withstand NJ and 8 days in Nevada I think I could handle a career there.

I'm asking because I enjoy being a firefighter and I was talking to a buddy about moving out there.

I don't think NJ Fire certs are really good anywhere.

Try calling the Nevada Fire College/Marshall.

Google that sh*t man!:D :p

I was born and raised in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. I know the heat out there. I also now that heat here right now is just gross. The humidity is just pain terrible.
I just dropped my brother off at the airport to return home to LA. He wined like a little girl about the hot humid air here the whole time during his vist. :D

Thanks for all of the replies. I will be looking into it some more to see if I can get into one of the departments out there. I know it's not the hottest out there yet, but it was pretty hot, 90's for the most part, when I was there. It is over 100 in NJ with the humidity right now and I hate it already with only 2 days back. I also have an aunt and cousin that live right outside of Las Vegas so that's also good to know.

NJ is just an absolute crappy place to be in. I mean, I love the Jersey Shore, but this place sucks compared to some place like Vegas.

Thanks again for the replies/information and I'll be emailing you, LVFRENG1.

Sadly you just missed most of the testing. probably going to have to wait another 1-2 years to apply. :(

Piney, are you an EMT? Every department in the Valley (with the exception of Clark County) requires you to have your Basic to even test. From what I've heard lately, in order to be invited to the academy you need to have your Intermediate.

Henderson Fire does their own transporting. Las Vegas Fire (someone correct me if I'm wrong) transports a minimum of 2 patients plus MVA's. I don't think that Clark Country transports at all. North Las Vegas Fire station 53 (from what a FF at 55 told me) is the only transporting unit. But they are looking into doing more.

LVFR and CCFD test every two (even) years and Henderson just tested in February. NLVFD also just tested (they used to do a joint test with LVFR) and I'm guessing it will be another 2 years before the next.

LVFR, CCFD, and NLVFD are all growing, so you'll have a better chance of getting on one of them. HFD hasn't built a new station in years, so they don't hire as many (their August academy will have 15 with another possible 15 in January 2009).

As CAL mentioned, Boulder City hasn't tested in many years. They do have a Reserve program, but you need to be an EMT-I.

Mesquite Fire (a hour NE of Vegas) is another somewhat growing department. I believe they currently have 2 or 3 stations, but the city is growing. They also have a Reserve program.

Your best bet would be to get hired by either AMR or MedicWest (formerly known as Southwest). At AMR we respond mostly with LVFR and NLVFD. I believe that MedicWest responds with CCFD and NLVFD.

Unfortunately, no, I'm not an EMT. I only have BLS, which consists of only Standard First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens Training, and CPR/AED For The Professional Rescuer provided through the American Red Cross. I have the following NJ Certifications:

Firefighter 1
IMS-100
NIMS-700
Level 1 CBRNE (WMD) Awareness
HAZMAT Awareness
Level 2 HAZMAT Operations
Level 3 HAZMAT Technician
Level 5 On Scene Incident Commander
Confined Space Awareness

I will be acquiring the following:

Confined Space Operations (this was scheduled for May, but the NJ State Police postponed it until further notice)
Firefighter 2 (whenever I can get time to do this I will be)
EMT (most, if not all, career jobs require this so I will have to get certified as soon as possible if I want to transfer)

Our fire company operates on the same property as our counties volunteer hazardous materials team, which I am a member and Technician of, and our company is a technical/special rescue company so we train with different rescues (high angle, confined space, trench, etc.).

With what I have and plan on having, what else would I have to do if I missed anything? I've been told that you don't have to get into the emergency medial services in order to get a job with the fire departments out there and I'd rather not take that path because I'm not very interested in EMS.

If I where you I would get my EMT now.

Who ever told you about that is WRONG. I do not think there is one department that does NO EMS out West. If that does not interest you look some where else.

Get your NREMT. At least then you have a shot at challenging another states test.

No, I didn't mean that I was told not to do any EMS. I meant that I was told that taking the EMS route instead of going the fire route didn't matter for LVFD. By the way, I've been told by a LVFD firefighter.

If your serious about getting a job in the Vegas area move out there, find the local community college, a job that will be flexible with school, and start hittin the books and getting prepared for the upcoming tests. Except for your EMS(if you get it in NJ), chances are very few certs will transfer, so why not move, get familiar with what you're up against and the way things run in the area you want the job?

Well, I'm most definitely serious about moving out there, but I'm also seriously interested in the FDNY or Hackensack FD in northern NJ. They are all career departments, but right now I am just weighing my options and getting some training/education under my belt.
