The fire house kitchen is a unique place (or the squad room, or the roll call room, or the front bumper-whatever it is in your firehouse). It is a place where fire fighters spend a significant amount of time with their co-workers. In many cases, they spend more time at that table than with their brother and sister FF than they do eating with their families.
The interpersonal dynamics involved is what makes it a unique place. You have to be tough to survive there. There are a diverse group when discussing any particular subject. There is a pecking order.
This board is alot like a firehouse kitchen table. I have been reflecting on this as I approached post 10,000. That alot of posts. Although it has been spread out for about 7-8 years or so. I have seen alot of people come to sit at the table. I have seen alot of people leave the table. Some willingly. Some by force.
There are alot of people sitting at the table who I have the utmost respect for; Gonz, Harve, Steve, the FDNY guys, ChiefKN, Jason, sconfire, Sheri, Cheffie and a few others who are probably escaping my mind right now. I appreciate the comraderie and the mutual respect.
Another guy I have respect for is Noz, although it took me too long to figure it out.
And, like any firehouse table, some of the people sitting there are complete idiots and jerks.
The secret to survival at the table is picking your time to speak. In my opinion, you don't have to earn your right to express your opinion, but you have to earn your right to have that opinion listended to and respected.
You will notice that I do not post on every topic presented, as some do. If there is a topic that I know nothing about, I do not post. If there is a thread about a topic in which I know alot, I have no problem stating my piece and backing it up with experience and facts. I also have no problem throwing the BS flag when one of you is full of crap.
Some of you have mistaken passion and a firm conviction to my beliefs as arrogance. Some of you would be well served by having conviction. When someone posts a differing opinion on a subject where I have a firm contrary belief, I will challenge that opinion. It is wimpy and wishy-washy to do otherwise. Why in the world should a person with a principled belief change that conviction just because another person posts something in disagreement? There is nothing wrong with standing up for what you believe is right.
Passion and conviction is not arrogance. It is actually an indication of integity.
So is admitting you are wrong when you are wrong. I have no problem doing that when I am wrong.
A sense of humor and a thick skin also go a long way in surviving the kitchen table.
Just to set the record straight.
* Yes I have a life
* I am not old
* I am not angry
* I am not always right
* I am a volunteer fire fighter and have never been career
* I am a life member of a union
* I am a Christian
* I love this country
10,000 posts does not make me any different than anybody else. I do not feel like these are my forums to police (as I have been accused). I will continue, at least for the foreseeable future, to post here. Try to read my posts in the context of the above post.
Please stay safe.

George,
Congratulations. Yes, like many others here, we have had our lil spats. You are a very knowledgable person and have a trait that I deeply respect...... You call them like you see them....... I do the same thing, but they just call me an a**hole.........
As for people like AZ who thing George is just doing this to toot his own horn..... You are way off. George isn't one of those people who come on here trying to boost their post-count by little one line posts like "LOL" or whatever. Go through and look at his posts and you will see that probably 96% of the time he actually has something to say, whether you like what he has to say or not.
It's not all about just trying to agree with people so you don't look like an idiot..... George isn't afraid to look like an idiot, as he has proven!!!:D :D ;)
Congrats again, George........ And many more to ya, brother!!:cool:

In fact, the only thing I can agree on is that we've never totally agreed on everything on here. Or something. I Think. However, as you and others have said, the right to Disagree, Discuss, Disturb, Debate, and Disavow, is something that we should never take for granted, and always protect. Whether you love him or loathe him, he is a solid example of the engine that drives these forums. Without the guys and gals like him who participate regularly, and particularly those who aren't afraid to stick thier neck out at the risk of an arguement or a challenge, these types of forums would have little value.
I can say that for a little guy from a small town in the mountains, I have learned a lot around here over the years, often from the very bunch that George mentioned. I hope they all keep it up long into the future, and keep giving us a reason to return.

I used to debate George on the old AOL firefighting NJ boards...although, he won't remember me (I had another name).
I'm really surprised to be on that list, but thank you for your kind words. I respect your contributions as well. As someone who operates in the jurisdiction you used to work for, I respect your expertise in the fire investigation world.
=========
I've been slapped around by George on these boards, and he's caused my blood to boil... but boy, if that doesn't describe my relationships with my brothers down at the firehouse, I don't know what does!
I've had knock-down, drag-outs with the boys at the firehouse and the next day we're smacking each other on the back and joking around.
I also don't always like George's approach. At times, he's a bit too rough and short-tempered...but hey, that's his style. I always read his posts, they are usually interesting and certainly entertaining!
So, George, congrats on your contribution. This board, while bizarre at times, does offer a great place to process the latest news of the fire service. The opinions are always interesting, the contributors range from the expert to the novice, the crazy to the way too sane.

All admirable traits. Except, sticking to your guns, having passion, not letting yourself get pushed around and confidence in your opinions and values doesn't always make you right. That is my beef with George, everything is based on his corner of New Jersey and how whatever works there will automatically work everywhere. Or if George wouldn't do it no one should. Sorry, not buying any of that folks. George and I have alternately battled and occasionally agreed and I find his attitude and arrogance a major reason why I usually disagree with him.
Even still, I wish him well and hope he can back away from the computer long enough this summer to catch a little sun with the family.

Not everything you wouldn't do is a safety issue involving someone being in danger. A great example of that would be the Stanley FUBAR tool topic. Just because you wouldn't buy personal tools, or wouldn't carry some tools that weren't issued in your turnout pockets, doesn't mean that everyone that does or wants to discuss it is "moronic" as you said in that thread.

You make a valid point about that thread. But please notice two things. One, I called the thread moronic, nothing else. Second, it is my belief that the agency should be buying you the tools you need to operate safely and efficiently. Once they buy you those tools, you should be trained on those tools. In the interest of standardization, I do not believe it benefits the FD to have members bringing their own tools into the job. If I was the king, I would prohibit it. I would, however (as king), never buy a tool or a piece of equipment w/o the input of the guys in the field getting dirty and using them every day. I am a strong believer in standardization. Always have been.
I do not want to start a thing on buying tools here. I know that was not your point. You make a vaild point that I tried to address. If you want to talk about personal purchase of tools, let's continue this on the FUBAR thread.
Now. Back to paying homage to me.

Believe it or not, somewhere in that post you took a great union stance. Why buy tools for work? It is the responsibility of the city to do so. You set a bad precedence if you go out and buy your own axe or pliers.
I am sure you did not mean it that way, but that's the way I took it. And in that aspect I am glad we agree on something.

I am not 100% against unions. I have said that there is good that they have done and will do. I also agree with you that when you set precedents, it is very difficult to "unset" them.
For example, do any of you know why FF have to clean their own firehouse, build their own rec facilities, etc. Because about a hundred years ago some idiot set the precedent and it has never been broken.
My complaints about unions is when there is a "less work for more money" mindset and ridiculous work rules that have been set for no other reason than to give someone a job.
They have conquered mountains in terms of workplace safety, benefits, overtime pay, working conditions and for collective bargaining.
I have said before that I am a Life Member of my public agency union.

Everyone please give George a break. He is actually a crippled retard that has nothing else to do with his day than try to talk big boy with people on the internet. Rather than chastise him we should be encouraging him to go out and make something of his rather miserable existance.
He has one of those pointers attached to his head and he has to nod his head up and down to hit the keys. So, it takes him around an hour just to type a 3 sentence response.
Way to go George.... go get some.
I'm going to go do my laundry and work out and maybe when I get back you will have done something productive but I doubt it. I hope chemo cures your cancer of the mouth

Gonzo,
It's all good. No more worrying about George. He's now on my "Ignore List".
FWIW, I have one guy on my ignore list, and George isn't even close...
If I hit ignore to every guy that disagreed with me, or whom I thought was a little abrasive or arrogant from time to time, this place would be pretty quiet, and I would be pretty dense. I can fully appreciate that not everyone understands my world and my motivations, and I can't possibly understand everyone elses. That does not mean we can't learn from one another now and again.
It takes two to start an arguement, and either one to stop it. You choose to participate, and by that act, you choose to allow him or anyone else to frustrate you. :)

* Yes I have a life
* I am not old
* I am not angry
* I am not always right
* I am a volunteer fire fighter and have never been career
* I am a life member of a union
* I am a Christian
* I love this country
10,000 posts does not make me any different than anybody else. I do not feel like these are my forums to police (as I have been accused). I will continue, at least for the foreseeable future, to post here. Try to read my posts in the context of the above post.
Please stay safe.

I sort of view George's commentary as a contra indicator/barometer. When he calls me a troll, an idiot, or some other pejorative it's my way of knowing I have the correct position.

So why the double standard when it comes to George? :confused: Some of you saw the opportunity to hurl some insults and have been like sharks at feeding time.
