Are there any members of the Fort Wayne Fire Department that frequent this page? I am in the current recruit process and would like to ask a few questions about the department. Thanks.

Just curious about general department info such as run stats, work conditions, the level of involvement in EMS, etc. Also interested in learning more about the city itself, as in what are the best neighborhoods, schools, etc.
Are you on FWFD?

Citywide, we make just under 18,000 runs a year. There are 18 stations and close to 400 members. Working conditions are very good, with up to date equipment, safety practices and operating procedures. Fort Wayne is a very progressive yet still aggressive department. Benefits are great compared to a lot of other departments. We are first responders, certified in the Academy to the EMT-Basic level. We assist with a private ambulance company on medical calls. I believe the Academy is 22 weeks long now, with a year of probation and moving from training house to training house every two months. Then you are basically a fill-in for two years after that and fill-in where ever they need you, while you complete our local Journeymans program. If you make it into the Academy this time around you will be the first class to go thru an Academy in the new Public Safety Academy.
There are a good number of schools to choose from. Better city school would be Snider HS area/neighborhoods. Other really good areas are Carroll HS area in the northwest side, Leo HS area in the northeast side, and Homestead HS area and its large area in the southwest side of town. Fort Wayne is still a very affordable town, even more so now with the housing market down and prices on existing homes being lower than normal.

Thanks for the info! Do you guys run all medical calls, just high priority calls, or only when specifically requested by the private EMS agency?

The FWFD website has a posting that additional interviews have been scheduled for 8/5 - 8/7. Does anyone know if these are for those who have already completed the psych/medical exams? Or, are they interviewing additional people to fill up the prospective class?
